Question about Sony TA-FE370 2-Channel Amplifier

1 Answer

Hi, my sony ta-fe370 has stopped working. All fuses seem fine and there is no obvious visual problems inside. The red led next to the power button comes on but then goes out again. The source selection lights do work too. There is a hum noise (not from the speakers) that suggests it has power. Also, all of the other decks connected to this also have lost power. This would suggest blown fuses from a surge but they are all fine too. I figure fix the amp first then the rest of the units. Any ideas?

I mean that the decks (MD, Tape, CD, Radio) that were with this amp all nolonger work. This is despite changing the power leads and moving house (so not a problem withe the socket or mains curcuit).

You can't wire an equalizer to this amp unless you only want to equalize one source, because it doesn't have a tape monitor function.

The problem is hard to track down, but fixable. You need to determine if the pre-amp has failed or the power amp. To determine which try this: Connect a device which plays music and turn the volume control fully up! You can sometimes hear the sound better via a pair of headphones. If you can hear any signal or music breaking through, then the pre-amp section is OK. If you can't it might not be. If you can hear faint music then it will be the main power amp to blame. Now because you have lost both channels you must only investigate devices (such as IC's) which have both channels running to them. Some amps have one big power amp IC that does the work. So if that goes it takes the sound with it. Have a look at whatever is on the big heat sink first, that will determine a lot of your future actions.

Playing it loud for about 20 minutes it suddenly fell silent. Power is fine as is fuse. What has blown?

Hi, even though the mains fuse on back of amplifier is fine, the speaker fuses might have blown.
Now really you need to take it to get repaired but if you know someone who has electronics knowledge they could look inside the amplifier to check the speaker output fuses.
I wouldn't want to advise you to do it as there are dangerouse voltages inside the amplifier.
If you need more help, I will guide you.

If you can't hear any sound from the headphone output, and by sound I mean a hum with the volume turned up, then the amp has either got a faulty internal power supply or the main amp has failed. Try looking inside to see if any fuse has blown. Also look around to see if you can see or smell anything has blown.

Sony TA-540E TWIN DRIVE AMPLIFIER

Hi Jimbob. Sounds like you have dirty/dry controls/switches. The contact lubricant dries out on them producing intermittent and scratchiness when you operate them. Clean any offending controls or signal switches with CRC2-26 by squirting(to flood then internals) each control/switch. you will have to do this from the inside of the amp. You may also have a dirty speaker protection relay, sound may return to a dead channel when you turn the vol up points to that. Good Luck. If you need more info feel free to get back to me here. Happy to talk you through more if you cant sort it out.

Graeme
