Why is Mac address 00:0F1F:BE:79:86 showing up when I check for connected devices to Netgear genie. I have no idea what device it's for. Thank you. markgravelle@xplornet.ca

I do not know what operating system you are using, but I run it on Win 7. When I click on a device, I get both the IP address and the MAC address of the device. You have to name the device if you want to have it identified in the program.

Sometimes you may see the device name come up during the scan. You should note the device IP address for it, and when add the name in the Network Map function. Not the easiest way, but if you disconnect all items, and then scan as you add each one, you can map the entire network by IP and MAC addresses to each device.

Good Luck

How to find the MAC address of a GE MAC 5500

Generic answer: Many devices with built-in Ethernet have a bar code sticker with MAC address in the same area as the serial number sticker - sometimes they are on the same label. You may be able to get it using the system information display. If all else fails, open the network router administration page and look for connected devices, then disconnect the 5500 network cable and refresh the device page to see which one disappeared.

How do i add the mac address of my printer to the list of permitted devices

Disconnect the Ethernet cable between the router and the cable-modem (or DSL-modem).
Access the web-interface inside the router.
Allow "all" MAC-addresses to access the router.
Turn the printer off.
Turn the printer on, so that it gets a "fresh" IP-address from the router.
On the router's web-interface, get it to show a list of the "active" DHCP-connections.
It should show the IP-address and MAC-address for your printer.
Copy that MAC-address, and the MAC-address of your computer.
On the router's web-interface, access the table of "allowable" MAC-addresses.
Add the two MAC-addresses.
Enable the "selected MAC-addresses only" option.
Reconnect the Ethernet cable.

NOOK is not capable of responding to the Linksys router

The tech was correct about that matter. However you can configure the MAC to always allow the device.
  1. Find your MAC for NOOK. I think you have already did.
  2. Go to Setting and then to the Second Page to find it.
  • Configuring MAC
  • Wireless MAC Filter. To filter wireless users by MAC Address, either permitting or blocking access, click Enable.
  • If you do not wish to filter users by MAC Address, select Disable.
  • Prevent. Clicking this button will block wireless access by MAC Address.
  • Permit Only. Clicking this button will allow wireless access by MAC Address.
  • Edit MAC Address Filter List. Clicking this button will open the MAC Address Filter List. On this screen, you can list users, by MAC Address, to whom you wish to provide or block access. For easy reference, click the Wireless
  • Client MAC List button to display a list of network users by MAC Address.
  • Change these settings as described here and click the Save Settings button to apply your changes or Cancel Changes to cancel your changes.

Please rate the answer as well. Feel free to contact if you have any other problems or if this solution didn't solve the issue.

Need to mate my rotor with my cable internet

You need to get to the web configuration page of your router and clone the MAC address of your modem. It's because cable internet providers uses MAC address of a device to be able to connect to their server.

You can follow this manual to access the web configuration tool and look for the topic MAC Cloning Address.

http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/WRT54GL-EU_11_UG_A-WEB.pdf

If in some case, your internet didn't work after connecting the router and after cloning the MAC address of your modem. Try to turn off your modem and disconnect everything from there, turn off your router as well and disconnect everything. Wait for 1 minute and plug the power cord back to your cable modem and plug the ethernet cable. Wait for 1 minute, turn reconnect everything to your router to the modem, and Clone the MAC address again.

Hope this helps.

When I puy a time restriction on My Daughters Computer (Mac Address) for some reason it also blocks (disconnects) my Computer. Help..

This seems as though you may not be using the MAC address directly off the NIC on your daughters PC, which may be inside the PC.

The way to get the info on her specific MAC address is to download SIW, from Gabriel Topalas website. It is a CNET top 100 download (verified virus free)and is just great!

Once you are sure you have the specific address of her PC there are other options, but I would need to be live with you to trouble shoot them. Try the free way first, but if that work let me know I CAN solve the problem.

Thanks,
Jim

I have the same problem too

Try this procedure:

To Spoof a MAC Address
  1. Connect the computer that your ISP's installers used to establish Internet connection to the router. If you are unsure which computer was used, call your ISP, and ask what MAC address was registered. Then, using the instructions in the box below find the computer whose MAC address matches their records.
  2. Disconnect other computers from the router.
  3. (If you do not want to disconnect other computers, you need to know the adapter's MAC address, as described in the box below. Then, in step 6, type Use This MAC Address, entering the adapter's address.)
  4. In an Internet browser type the address 192.168.0.1.
  5. Type admin for the username, password for the password, and click OK.
  6. Go to the Basic Settings > Router Mac Address.
  7. Select Use Computer MAC Address.
  8. Click Apply. This automatically gives the router the computer's MAC address.
  9. Click Test to make sure you are connected. If you are not connected, contact your ISP.

MAC address cloning

Hi killer - MAC (Media Access Control) cloning is used to clone your MAC address.
Some ISPs (most notably MediaOne) use your NIC's MAC address to authenticate your service. When you change the computer that you have connected to your cable modem service, you usually have to call up Tech Support and give them the MAC address of the NIC in the new machine. Since hardware routers have the equivalent of a NIC on their WAN port in order to connect to your cable modem, you would have to do the same thing if you're installing a router.
Recently, however, some ISPs have started to recognize the MAC addresses of popular routers and disconnect service if a router is detected. Fortunately, many router manufacturers are including the capability to either set the router WAN port MAC address to anything you want, or copy it from a computer connected to the router LAN side. You can check the Router comparison chart under "Mac addr. clone" to see which routers support this feature. Then consult the router's documentation for directions on using the feature.
So basically, it's used to fool ISPs into thinking there isn't a router. If the router has the same MAC address as either your NIC card or your modem the ISP won't detect and service won't be interrupted. Most ISPs don't do this so iy's rarely needed.
If this answers your question PLEASE rate this as fixed. If you need more help just add a comment and I'll be happy to assist you further. Thanks.

Hi Stevetabor9,

Finding and Registering Your Xbox Console's MAC Address
  1. Turn on your Xbox console with no game disc in the disc tray.
  2. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings, and then Network Settings.
  3. The 12-digit number at the bottom-right corner of theNetwork Settings screen is the MAC address of your Xbox console. Do not change your Xbox console MAC address; just write it down so that you can use it later.

No Internet With New Router, Computer, or Adapter

This document is relevant if you had an Internet connection, but lost it when: * Adding a router to your network, or * Using a different Ethernet adapter card or computer than the one your ISP used during installation. Use ISP Configuration to see whether you need to "spoof a MAC address" to connect to your ISP. If so, follow the instructions in this document. If the Ethernet card that was used during ISP installation is not available, you may need to register the new Ethernet card's MAC address with your ISP for the following to work. MAC address stands for Media Access Control address (not "Macintosh computer"!), a unique number built into modems, routers and other network hardware. It ensures that one piece of equipment is not mistaken for another one. Some ISPs validate your connection by checking the MAC address of the Ethernet adapter in computer that was registered during ISP installation. If you add a router or change computer or Ethernet adapter, these ISPs will drop your Internet connection, because they find the MAC address of the newly added router or adapter, instead of the one they expect. To fix this, change the router to report the Ethernet adapter's MAC, instead of its own. This is called "spoofing the MAC address". To find a PC's or Macintosh's MAC address, see How to Find an Adapter's MAC address : http://www.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=252225&thid=102075. To Spoof a MAC Address 1. (If you do not want to disconnect other computers, you need to know the adapter's MAC address, as described in the box below. Then, in step 6, type Use This MAC Address, entering the adapter's address.) 3. In an Internet browser type the address 192.168.0.1. 4. Type admin for the username, password for the password, and click OK. 5. Go to the Basic Settings > Router Mac Address. 6. Select Use Computer MAC Address. 7. Click Apply. This automatically gives the router the computer's MAC address. 8. Click Test to make sure you are connected. If you are not connected, contact your ISP.
