Thanks, I think its the heat do you have a solution for me?

  • gramywheels May 11, 2010

I am guessing my problem is heat sensing - my machine seems to get extremely hot. I try to keep the fans clear by placing above the table on blocks but it still can get so hot you can almost not touch it? Is there a solution or am I just stuck?

Two thoughts:
Make sure it's on "plug" power. If problem doesn't happen - it's the battery.

Second heat sensing could be shutting it down.

What are some good tips to make a laptop battery last?

Alright here are a few tweaks you can do to make your battery last longer.

1. Obviously turn the brightness down when you can, that will save loads of power.

2. Minimize gaming and other high-power programs.

3. Turn off Aero in windows. You do that by right-clicking desktop, clicking settings/display/properties(I'm not sure which been a long time since I've used anything above XP) and find the win 7 classic theme without aero. It should be pretty obvious which one doesn't have Aero it will be by itself.

4. Try to use as little processor as you can. Try running a program called Game Booster by razer. to minimize your processor use as much as possible. That program closes non-essential programs and stops non-essential services to reduce use. You CAN choose what it does and doesn't close when you start it.

5. Unplug anything USB you have connected to your laptop if you aren't using it. Even if you aren't using them they are still drawing precious power.

If you do all of these things you should get at least an extra 3-4 hours off of your batter if not more.

Lapop Computer

Open Control Panel, Power Options, set High Performance, Change Plan settings, Change Advanced Power settings, set Sleep and Hibernate to Never, Adjust Advanced settings to your preference. You didn't post the "message" you get 3-4 times? Shut down the Laptop when not in use, your laptop will last longer, and unplug to prevent Surge, and overheating damage. Not to mention the fan sucking dust into the machine that requires you to keep cleaning.

I have an Acer Aspire 5735. I use it everyday for my work, however over the last few months it has started to turn itself off. The fan starts to hum loudly for a few seconds and then it shuts down. I have...

The way you describe the problem, with the fan getting noticeably louder then shutting the computer down entirely, sounds like an overheating issue; the fan spins up to top speed to try and cool the system down, fails to do so, and the machine shuts itself down as a safety precaution.

Propping it up might have provided it with a bit more airflow, which may be why you experience the shut downs a little less frequently. I would invest in a can of compressed air, which can be found at any office supply store, and blow out the exhaust vents on your laptop. If you've never cleaned your machine before, dust and other debris that accumulates in the vents and around the fan have probably built up enough to restrict air flow.

I am sorry. This problem is best solved by doing a complete system restore of you laptop.

Do you have the restore disk that came with it?

"logging off" ... it never ends. now what?

From your start menu, choose computer, at the top of that window hit system properties, on the left hit system protection, It should be open to the system retore page, Hit the system restore button. What you want is to restore to the last day your computer shut down right. For me that was just before the last windows update on 5/7/2009 when my computer as well started not shutting down. The system restore doesn't erase any of your files it just restores the system files and drivers back to the date you specify. Worked for me!

On shutting down my laptop it gave the message, "installing 1 of 1" do not turn off your computer. It did not turn off all night. I turned it off by using the on/off button then shut it down...

When you start your laptop, press F8. You will get a menu (Normal boot, Reboot...). Choose Last good known configuration (something like that).
