What are the sign's of your fuel pump going bad?

The most obvious bad fuel pump symptoms is your vehicle won't start, or it starts but does not run for very long before eventually stalling out. Your vehicle will act as though it is out of gas, even though the fuel tank is full. As the fuel pump attempts to feed the engine fuel, your vehicle may make bucking noises but will not spark up.
If you do suspect that you have symptoms of a bad fuel pump, you can listen to it to see if it is operating. Electric fuel pumps can be heard when you turn the ignition to the second position, so if you do not hear any sound coming from your fuel tank with the key turned, your fuel pump may have failed or the motor may have burnt out. Also, if you notice that the fuel pump is making an excessive whining noise, it may be a sign that the part is on the verge of failing.
Two common bad fuel pump symptoms that your vehicle may experience are engine misfire at higher speeds, or difficulty climbing hills. These symptoms are a sign that your engine is not getting enough fuel. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you may want to perform a fuel pump pressure test.
In order to perform a fuel pump pressure test, you will require a fuel pressure gauge. By inserting the gauge in the Schrader valve (usually located in the engine compartment), you will be able to determine if your engine is receiving adequate pressure of fuel from the vehicle's tank. The required pressure reading will be different for vehicle specific applications. Most repair garages have one of these gauges on hand to perform this test.
Your fuel pump may fail or become a faulty fuel pump for a number of reasons. Rust, debris and dirt may enter into the vehicle's fuel system, and may potentially be clogging the fuel filter or the fuel strainer. This does not allow enough fuel to pass through to the fuel pump which overheats the parts, causing damage. A second cause of fuel pump failure is damage to internal parts caused by small particles of dirt entering into the fuel pump. The fuel strainer and fuel filter were unable to keep these particles from entering into the fuel. Another major cause of a faulty fuel pump or failure is letting your gas level get too low. When the level of fuel is low, the fuel pump has to work much harder, becomes overworked, does not cool down properly, and as a result can be damaged. You should never let your fuel reach less than a quarter of a tank.

Transit pump code p0216 how can i fix this

P0216 DTC - Injection Timing Control Circuit Malfunction and this means the diesel fuel injection pump has a timing failure. This could be that the injection pump timing needs adjusted OR the failure is internal to the injection pump and therefore non-adjustable.

NOTE: If your vehicle is a Dodge Ram with Cummins engine then be aware that fuel delivery problems frequently cause this code. Prolonged fuel delivery problems can cause injection pump failure!

Symptoms of a P0216 DTC may include:
Low power
Crank, but no start
Hard start
Displays an intermittent stumble or miss
Engine may start and then stall
Engine may appear to drive fine but surge at idle

The most frequent cause of this code is a bad injection pump due to poor fuel delivery. Fuel delivery problems could be:
A plugged diesel fuel filter
An in-tank blockage
Air in the fuel due to a cracked in-tank fuel ine above the fuel level
Bad transfer (lift) pump
Injection pump out of time

Possible Solutions: First, simply check if your injection pump timing is adjustable. If so, check the timing and adjust if necessary.

If you think that you may have a fuel delivery problem, then check the lift pump operation. On Dodge Ram with the Cummins engine, the lift pump should produce about 45 oz of diesel in 25 seconds of operation. This can be performed by disconnecting the fuel hose from the injection pump and pumping the fuel into an approved container. Bump the engine over but do not start it. Then the lift pump will operate for 25 seconds. If the fuel is aerated, then check/repair fuel line and recheck.

With the fuel hose connected the fuel pressure should be 10psi. If the fuel delivery tests fail, replace the diesel fuel filter and recheck.

If it still fails then verify there are no restrictions in the fuel tank

Then replace the lift (transfer) pump. IT SHOULD BE NOTED that if this code surfaced after a routine fuel filter replacement or if you have any of the above symptoms after routine fuel filter replacement, then suspect the fuel transfer pump. This occurs because even a weak transfer pump can still provide enough fuel for the engine to run. But when the fuel system\'s prime is lost due to fuel filter replacement, it may not restart again without fixing the fuel delivery problem.

If you found your injection pump to be bad, the lift pump should be checked for operation to protect the new injection pump. This is because weak or low output from lift pump are common cause of injection pump failure. There are some aftermarket kits that can be purchased to warn the operator when the fuel pressure/volume drops to level that could damage the injection pump.

Hope this helps (remember to rating this free answer and leave a testimonial comments).

I am having problems getting fuel to my carberator on my 1985. F-250 4wd. (mfrd 11-84) 7.5 liter gas, dual tank. The engine will start for several seconds & then stall out as tho the fuel is cut...

there is a electronic switching device underneath on frame that switches from tank to tank check that to see if it is bad.
I have had them go bad in the past and had to temporarily hook up electric fuel pump to pump from 1 gas tank to get home.

2001 Blazer: what are symtoms of a bad fuel pump?...

My fuel pump just went bad in my 2001 Blazer. The mechanic told me that the first symptom, which my Balzer had but I didn't know it was a symptom, was the gas gauge jumping around especially when it was low on gas. Another symptom is a surging feeling. The pump itself is about $600 plus labor. They have to drop the fule tank to replace it.

Where is the fuel filter located on a 2005 Nissan Altima.....also, what are the symptoms of a bad filter or pump?

The fuel filter is located inside the fuel pump on a 2005 nissan altima. The fuel pump is under the back seat. You must remove the bottom cushion on the driver side. Before removing the fuel pump you must remove the negative battery cable and relieve fuel pressure. trouble with filters hesitation in starts could be some bogging and when acceleration poor fuel output but it depends on what ur car is doing?some of these same symptoms could be duel to idle air conrol valve controls idle and hesitation in acceleration

How do you know if your fuel pump is going out

The best diagnostic for the fuel pump is a pressure test. Need to know the specs on it (should be around 40-60 PSI), hook it up to a fuel pump tester and there you go.

The symptoms the engine presents when a fuel pump is going bad could include:

- hard to start
- hesitation
- loss of power upon acceleration
- going dead at idle
- others...

But other problems could cause these same symptoms.
