SOURCE: Lawnmower Starting Pull Cord Replaement

There will be a piece of casing that holds the starter mechanism in. Usually held by 4 screws (probably torx screws unless it's an old machine).
Undo these screws and you will find the cord carrier inside.
Observe how the starter dogs are located, and how it all goes together.
You may be able to remove & replace the cord without taking the carrier off the casing, but it is probably easier if you do.

Then you simply remove the old cord, thread a new cord through the hole & tie it. Reassemble the carrier onto the casing. Thread the cord out of the casing & through the handle, tie that end.
Then wind the cord around the cord carrier until there is a slight tension on the spring.
Screw the casing back on the mower and you're away.

Remove the housing covering the clutch. The cord spool can then be accessed. Replace the cord. Be careful that you maintain the proper spool spring tension. Check operation before reassembling

SOURCE: Cannot pull the cord more than 6 inches to start Toro lawn mower.

Hi Patti, If you can not pull the cord more that what you said, try removing the spark plug and see if that makes a difference, if not, leave the spark plug out to prevent accidental starting, raise up the front of the mower and see if you can turn the blade if not...it only gets worse from there. If you can't turn the blade from under the mower, the engine is more that likely seized up, sorry

Pull rope on sears 5.0 lawn mower pulls hard sometimes or you pull the cord and the spindle does not always turn. I guess it's not catching all the time. What can I do for it ?

If mower has sit outside for a while the works in the recoil may be rusty and dry. Try some oil in all the working parts. See if that works for you.

Lawnmore pull cord replacement

Sears technicians can repair Briggs and Stratton cords fairly easily and it won't cost you much either. I had mine serviced last year and it took about 3 weeks and they just sent it off to the technicians and I just had to pay around $50 total.

It won't start. The pull chord won't pull out. Even a little. It was out at one time, in the loop on the mower handle, but I had to let it go into the motor and now it won't come out.

You will probably have to disassemble the rewind assembly and either replace the rope and/or straighten out the cord and properly reconnect it to the flywheel connection. Kits usually are available at the Sears parts store or lawn and garden centers that handle lawn mowers everywhere.
Best wishes,
TF

Make sure your flywheel brake is not engaged or the cover is hindering the mechanism somehow after it is installed

RE: SEARS SELF PROPELLED LAWN MOWER 917.374750..WHEN PULLING THE CORD TO START THE MOWER ( AS USUALLY IS DONE ) THE CORD FAILS TO MOVE. CKED THE UNDERSIDE FOR POSSIBLE OBSTRUCTIONS & FOUND NONE.

Most lawnmowers manufactured over the past 15 years have a safety lever that needs to be pulled in to allow the mower to be started. This lever is normally located near the handrail and acts as a failsafe that shuts down the mower if you were to trip or release it . The intent is to protect you from injury if you let go of the handlebar. make sure you've puled in the safety lever before pulling on the cord .. otherwise, it shouldn't budge.. Hope this helps..
