Question about Sony KDL40EX500 40 in. HD-Ready TV
If You do not see any open link or resistor, short IC or transistor on power supply it must be a control board problem. You must get the set to SONY, as it is necessary to exchange board and upgrade software.

Testimonial: "Opps - this was supposed to go down here... Hi - firstly, thanks for your help! Have been through the PSU with a fine tooth comb, checked all the MOSFETS, rectifier, diodes etc which all look fine. I was mixed up about the "Power Good" line though - apparently this is the PSU's signal to the connected boards that voltages are stable and they're "good to go". Anyway, thinking of replacing the caps next as the main primary power cap seems to have a slight bulge coming out of the top... And if that doesn't fix it, you're probably right - it could be the control board... Which would be a real bummer...."
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

SOURCE: My Sony KDL-32M3000 has dark
It will be either BM board (Video Processor board) or Tcon Board (top side of panel). I have similar problem...my TV turns on, lamps turns on (you can see them from back side panel holes) but just a dark blue picture appears with no image (like picture when external input is selected without signal), no OSD appears....some times I can heard audio (using Antena).
I'm thinking getting the BM board.

sometimes defective capacitors are not noticeable visually unless we use an capacitance tester/instrument .better replace the capacitors at the secondary of the transformer and resolder the pc board .check also the connectors make sure that it fits the socket tight..good luck
let me hear if you have further question..

I know its a 32 inch TVand its probably about 2 years old, give or take. If you got a warranty on it, I suggest calling whoever you got it from (BestBuy,Amazon, etc) and seeing what they can do for you to get it fixed for free. Otherwise call Sony abotu getting a real tech out to either fix or swap parts on the TV at your house, or where to send it for repair. Depending on what it costs, you are probably better off buying a new 32inch LCD TV for about $400.
It seems you have isolated it down to the power supply though. If you are confident enough, you can get a replacement on ebay for abotu $100.
Just depends on what you value more: time or money.
