Question about Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Calculator

1 Answer

Calculator is Very Slow

I purchased a USED TI-83 from Amazon. The calculator is very slow -- most buttons I have to push several times before they do something and some buttons won't work at all - like the OFF button. I put brand new batteries in the calculator. HELP!

This is happening to my Ti-83 Plus 1.15. It just started after this weekend; it worked fine last Friday and is now not working this Tuesday. I turn on the calculator and the message "RAM Cleared" Appears. I can clear this message or press enter and the message "Done" appears. But after that I have to hold each button around 1+ seconds before it appears on the screen. So far it seems I can preform all functions, but the buttons aren't responding and I can't turn it off (2nd)+off is not working at all no matter how long I hold the button. To turn it off I have to take the batteries out.

On the same note; I just entered an equation to the graph & it preformed the function quickly. So, is something wrong with the keypad on my Ti-83, maybe? I have tried the clear method of reseting with no improvement.

My calculator is slow, I plugged in 2 + 2 and it took my calculator almost a minute to solve. Help please!

If a foreign object is loged in the Rount IO port, it may short the circuits, making the calculator run slow. Remove any material in the IO port, by blowing air or some other way. Do not insert anything metallic.

Slow response time, having to hold down buttons.

Some foreign object may block the I/O port, could be the tip of a pencil or some other electrical conductor material.
Blow compressed air or just blow hard on it to dislodge the intruder.

How come there is no signal after I replace the new batteries?

The question is not complete. I assume you think your calculator does not turn on. Here are several diagnostic steps. Try them in sequence.

I am inserting a copy of an earlier post to a question similar to yours. Please read the post till the end.

A Try this before thinking of repairs.
  1. Push the ON button.
  2. Even if you see nothing, press the [2nd] key and release it.
  3. Press and HOLD the UpArrow key until the screen darkens.
  4. You may have to keep pressing UpArrow for a little while before you see anything.
B If that does not work
  1. Remove one of the AAA batteries.
  2. Press and hold the [CLEAR] key.
  3. While holding [CLEAR], reinsert the AAA battery and then
  4. turn the calculator on.
  5. The calculator should display the message "RAM Cleared".
  6. Release the [CLEAR] key and then press it one more time to remove the message "RAM Cleared".
C. Third option
  1. Remove batteries including the backup battery for 5minutes.
  2. After the 5 minute period, reinsert all of the batteries and
  3. turn the calculator on.
  4. Adjust the contrast if necessary.
D. Last option

The last option requires the reinstallation of the system. So to use it you must download the TIConnect 1.6 software from You must have the TI USB SilverLink or the TI Black serial cable ready. You must be connected to the Internet.
  1. Remove one of the AAA batteries.
  2. Press and hold the [DEL] key.
  3. While holding [DEL], reinsert the AAA battery and then
  4. turn the calculator on.
  5. The calculator should display "Waiting...Please install calculator software now".
  6. Connect the TI Connectivity cable between the computer and the calculator.
  7. Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OS Downloader.
  8. Follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the calculator's OS.
If the message "Error! Press any key to turn unit off. Then turn unit back on." appears on the graphing calculator, quickly, remove one battery from the calculator and reinstall it while the transfer is taking place.

You have several ways to connect the calculator
  • Serial Black cable that used to ship with the TI 83 Plus. It connects to a serial port on a computer and to the I/O port on the calculator. It requires the Graph Link software available on the TI web site (Downloads, Software and Apps, Connectivity)
  • USB Silver Link cable. It connects a USB port on the computer to the the I/O port on the calculator. It requires the TI connectivity software, also available on the TI Web site.
  • A USB mini A to mini B cable to connect two units.
  • An I/O cable to connect two calculators through their I/O ports.

Most likely your battery is dying.

You can replace by removing 6 screws at back of calculator, but cost of battery is around 40% of buying new TI-30XA from Amazon, Staples or elsewhere.

I've used TI-30XA's for years, batteries usually last 2-3 years, then I buy new calculator. The one time I tried to replace battery, fading display still problem, so circuit board had gone bad.

So you could try battery replace and may be OK, but also may be waste of time and $$

First time used in months

Check the batteries polarity.
Perhaps it needs a "reset", some calcs do have a "button" therefor, some do if you press the start button for some seconds.
Try to leave the calc overnight without any batt. inside.
