Question about Mtd Garden

How do I check an ignition switch (691641) to see if it is bad

It's a 6 pin switch for a garden tractor and there appears to be a burn line from the unmarked contact to the contact stamped G. Other contacts are marked S, M, B, G, L , and this group goes to wiring harness. Unmarked contact has lone red wire to it. Mower blows 20A fuse when starting if mower has to crank for more then 10 seconds. Fuse also blows when I turn the mower off with the key. I have a new starter and have not been able to locate a bare wire yet.

The unmarked contact is the hot wire (+), the G contact is the ground (-). There is probably a short which is causing the burn mark. The switch is not causing the fuse to blow. The switch is probably okay, because the fuse is blowing before the switch gets damaged.

If the mower starts within the 10 seconds, and then runs okay, the problem could be in the starter solenoid/relay -- it could have a (resistive) short which is pulling too much current.

However, this would not account for the fuse blowing when the mower is turned off. So, we need more info. What does the fuse connect to?

Ist of all is 10 amp the proper size?
2nd if you bypass and whatever you are replacing the fuse with, is it warm, or hot to the touch?
If it is you have a direct short in you have a direct short in the electrical system. Check for bare wires, wires touching the motor or chassis that don't have a connector.
Hope this is a FixYa

SOURCE: My riding mower blows fuses once you turn the key.

Sounds like you are on the right path, maybe some wires on the ignition were replaced backward, and you are sending +12v directly to ground? Does it blow right away?

4530 mahindra ignition wont start tractor, but will start by jumping seilenoid to starter

Well it could be several things a safety switch for the seat, mower deck etc not in the proper position. Blown fuse, bad ignition switch, burned out solenoid. if you jump the battery side of the solenoid to the small terminal and nothing happens, it's the solenoid. If it turns over check the other items. Start with the fuse that powers the ignition switch.

Engine will turn over but won't start checked carburator and fuel filter and they are ok are there any saftey switches that would prevent engine from starting?

Since engine is turning over by using the ignition switch it should not be a safety switch problem,
Sounds to me you might have a spark / coil problem
If you have spark then fuel shutoff selonoid on bottom of carb bowl might be bad and not opening.
which in that case I unplug from harness and unscrew from carb bowl , pull out center pin if connected cut off if not throw it in the trash when I do this I always put a shut off valve in the gas line.
You will need a very thin open end wrench to unscrew selonoid from bittom of carb.

Why won't my raining lawn mower not start?

Check oil level, take off the spark plug clean it and regap and or buy new one and regap. Take carburator off and clean it. Test coil and ignition switch. Clean gas tank and fuel lines. There could be a lot of other things to check. It could be a safety switch, dirty cables, bad battery or bad wiring. It could just be a loose wire that's not grounded.

Toro groundmaster 325d wont turn off and belt keeps coming off

The won't shut off has to be a faulty ignition switch. The belts coming off indicate a problem the belt pulleys. The bearings may be bad and freezing up, this will cause the belt to smoke and tear up as well as make the pulley wobble . Does it smell like burning rubber ?? If not then you have a pulley out of line and or a pulley that's cracked or broken. Also check and make sure the deck pins are all in place and the locks are down on the quick release on front and side of deck. While the blades are disengaged turn all the blade hubs and pulleys to see if the turn fairly easy. Check for play or wobble in the pulleys and blade hubs(bearings and blade shaft, also known as the"spindle assembly") attach to these pulleys. Also check the idler pulley(also called the tensioner pulley for wear and check to see that they are in alignment with each other).

YTH2448 Mower will turn over but will not start. Tried replacing fuel filter, checked fuel lines for blockage. Still will not start.

After trying to start the tractor remove the sparkplug and Check to see if there is any fuel on the sparkplug, if not then the problem is probably ignition related. This could mean a safety switch is not being connected, or the ignition coil is defective. To check if it is a safety switch locat the ground wire from the ignition modual on the engine and dissconnect it and then see if the engine starts be careful because at this point you will have to reconnect it to shut the engine down if it does start. If it starts then one of the safety switches is not making a connection, this could be the seat switch or the transmission neutral switch, or even the pto engagement switch, or there might be another I didnt mention, if it does not start then the problem is most likely the coil has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Hope This Helps Don

I have a John Deere 317 tractor that does not start. The engine turns but does not fire. The plugs and points are good. I do not get a spark at the points or plug. What should I check next next.

We will be testing for voltage to the points, coil, engine to tractor wiring harness, ignition switch

Tools needed:
volt meter to read 12 volts, or test light

1) with the points open: is there voltage at the connection wire at the points
If yes; adjust points to .020" and try to crank engine and check for spark
*** you may want to determine if condensor is connected to this wire also
if no
2) check point side (neg or - ) of coil for voltage
if yes, engine should start
if no
3) check for voltage at the + side of coil
If yes, coil is bad
if no
4) check wire connector from engine to frame wiring harness
if yes; engine should start

if no
5) check wiring on the back of ignition switch
if yes; engine should start

if no
6) check that ignition switch RED or BATTERY supply wire has voltage
if yes; switch is bad

if no
7) check supply wire and circuit breaker connected to the battery side of the solenoid
if yes; engine should start

if no; circuit breaker could be at fault or wire connector at battery supply

try looking for a broken wire or a wireing harness shorted to ground, the fuse blowing in the harness will lead you to it if you are able to see where the wire goes. you have a short somewhere may be the fuel pump, too
