Question about Dell Latitude C640 Notebook
Bought refurbished for son in college. Has Vista Home Basic installed (also received Service Desk Upgrade CD). ATI 7500 not supported by Vista (minimum ATI 9500 needed) so 3D games will not play. Have seen some suggestions online to install ATI 9000 drivers or XP drivers but not sure if that would be permanent solution. Do I need to format the hard drive and install XP so acceleration works? Is it easier (cheaper) to replace hard drive and install XP? Thanks for giving me concrete answers, NOT guesses or theories!
Well, I'm amazed a C640 runs Vista at all. There's no reason to buy a new hard drive, except for the novenlty of having one loaded with Vista on a C640. It's a great laptop, and runs Windows XP PRo perfectly well. If you have one od the Dell XP install disks, just boot from it, and whenever it finds the vista install, hit excape, then at the next screen hit "D" to delete the partition, then choose "quick format", and load the Operation system. If you need an install disk, let me know. Good luck
