Question about Milwaukee Tool Milwaukee 18V 1/2 In Hammer Drill Kit 0627 24

Open Question

5380-21 Milwaukee 1/2" hammer drill stopped running. Was plugged into a converter off the truck with a heavy duty extension cord. I was drilling into concrete with ease and made it through 3 holes. The drill is young with light use. I did take it apart to look for scoring or burns and looked brand new. Do you think the trigger fried? Also did try in several outlets without an extension cord with no luck. What do you think?

Run the drill at about 1/2 speed for an hour to seat the brushes. This will clean the armature and prevent arcing from the new brushes.

it is, however sometimes the cost is the limiting factor. If you give me the model number and brand I can try and find some prices for you. But some of the major tool manufacturers offer a MAX RATE repair that sets the limit on how much it will cost you and they will fix everything. If it is less then you pay less.

If you mean the cord you can find the part number by going to and you will need the serial number for the correct one. Or you can also go to You will need to solder the wire ends to push into the swiitch. To release the old cord straighten one leg of a paper clip and insert next to the wire and gently pull out the old cord. UNPLUG tool first and make note of where the wires came from. The Milwaukee site also has a wiring diagram that you can download. Let me know if you need more assistance.

How to fix my heavy duty 120v drill

Sounds to me your armature needs replacing. Basically brushes either work or don't work. some times you may get heavy sparking but that is the spring not pushing the brush on to the commutator. Loss of power and smoking usually armature if you use the drill in this state you may burn out the field coils as well.

Put drill in revcerse and the chuck comes loose dropping the bit out

Yup, that is what happens. You can lessen that by really cranking it down, but it is an issue with most hand tightened chucks, and does not indicate a mechanical failure. I sometimes miss my old, heavy Milwaukee wrist-breaker with the keyed chuck. If it is just too much to live with, you could get a drill with the click in hex chuck or put a Jacobs keyed chuck on your hammer drill.
Anyway, I hear where you are coming from and share your frustration.

Milwaukee heavy duty hammer drill only works when pointed upwards. As soon as I point it down the motor stops (or doesn't start with the drill in that position).

could be loose connection at the switch or brush holders. You can go to to download a breakdown for this tool.

Milwaukee has a 5 yr warranty on all their tools. Best thing to do is find a service center in your area and have them look at it. Sounds like the bit collar is stuck or possibly cracked. No sense in spending money on the tool if you can get it covered under warranty.
