Question about Bernina Artista 180

1 Answer

My Singer 301 has been in the shop twice in the past year, and yet it still has problems, even though when I first get it back its fine. I recently had to take the bobbin apart to clear a bad jam, and I was so proud when I fixed it and got it all back together the right way. But now the upper thread keeps breaking, can't even get a few stitches done. It also has trouble catching the bobbin thread when I'm threading it up. Help! The warranty on the repair has run out and I certainly don't want to spend more, seeing that I've already spent $150. This is the machine I learned to sew on and I've never even taken it to a repair shop up until now. I love it and don't want to have to junk it, but also don't want to spend more money on it.

Now the upper thread has stopped breaking, but it won't stitch except every 10 stitches or so, and the thread is bunching up on the underside

It sounds like to me that the machine needs retiming if the machine is missing stitches, if I can't download the instructions here you can email me at kendourof@yahoo.com

SOURCE: Bobbin thread not picking up

Glad you managed to fix it yourself, in addition to the 250kms I would guess the cost would have been a lot.

It could be that there is a loose piece of thread, or some fluff which is obstructing the tension gauge. Try blowing around the theading area (or even run the hoover pipe near it to see if you can **** it out). I cleared mine by folding a piece of non fluffy material and rubbing gently between the tension dial and machine.

Good luck

SOURCE: Upper thread will not catch bobbin thread

Your machine is out of time. It would be best to have a tech adjust the timing.

SOURCE: Not catching stitches / bobbin correctly

Your timing has been messed up by breaking the needle.  When the needle hit the bobbin race, it shoved the needle bar up and now the needle is not in the correct position to catch the bobbin thread when the race rotates.  The needle has a little dip in the back, called the scarf.  When you take the neddle plate off and watch it move, you should see the little hook pass through the scarf.  That's how it makes the locking stitch and picks up the bobbin thread.  Unfortunately, you will need to take this in to a dealer or service place to have them adjust the needle bar height.  It's not a complicated task so see if they can check it while you wait.  It may be more difficult to fix, like retiming the machine.  But it doesn't sound like you've done any major damage to the mechanism.

Try changing the needle again. I have had some cause me trouble even if new. And make sure the bobbin is in the right way.

Singer 30215 putting in timing

Ouch! I can't find any info on your 30215. But there is an OLD 1944 book that will give you some idea of what to look for. Even though it is likely that your machine is more modern then the examples in the book... the basics of sewing machines hasn't changed much in the past 100 years.

Bobbin won't wind on Singer futura CE-100

My singer hasn't wound bobbins for years and I don't care because I use a Side Winder bobbin winder. It's much easier than takining the thread off the machine anyway. Available from Hancock, Jo Ann or even Wal Mart for about $30.

We recently bought a used 301 Singer Sewing machine, it appears to sew well but makes a loud clattering sound, where the needle goes up & down, is this typical for this machine?

If I remember the 301 is an American model slant needle with a gear driven motor, the machines were known as 'Rockets' the noise you can hear is the play in the shaft of the motor which is very common to that model if it is where the noise is coming from, if the noise is coming from the needle area then a drop of oil might do it some good.

What kind of bobbin singer 301 machine use

The Singer 301 uses the same bobbin as the Singer 221 (also known as a Featherweight). Not surprisingly it's called a Class 221/301 bobbin and is Singer part number 45785. If you don't have a Singer dealer or large sewing machine repair shop in your area, I would suggest purchasing from a reputable online seller such as Vintage Sewing or Sewing Machine 221 Sale. Below is a picture of what both the older and newer style of this bobbin looks like. 11da97d.jpg
