Question about HP Color LaserJet 3500 Printer

HP Color Laserjet 3500 printer - no black on left side of page

Prints well, except that the left side of each page is devoid of black. The right side is excellent black and color. Color is good on entire page, but there is a fade from the good right side black to no black on the left. There is no paper blocking the image, and I've substituted known good black cartridge and ITB from working CLJ 3500 printers in the building, same problem exists. Replaced the image drive assembly, RK2-0248-000CN, and added the washer to the shaft that HP recommends to prevent rattling or noisy black developer clutch sounds, XD1-1108-229CN while I was in there. Did a cold reset, and ran calibration. Still no black on left side. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you for replying. Yes, I've checked and cleaned the laser/scanner although I saw no toner on it. It's in the heart of the printer so it took some time to access and remove. I have a service manual from HP, and have replaced the electromagnetic clutch referred to as the developing engaging drive unit with no resulting improvement. During a print-stop test, a perfect image appears on the image drum of each toner cartridge (including black) but the black image does not transfer to the left side of the transfer belt, although all the colors do. No black is on the left side of the page but colors are. Still, the right side of the page is ideal with full color. Please tell me what part name(s) the developing unit consists of that you recommend replacing?

    I looked at the Web page you have given me the link to, showing the transfer roller and surrounding parts. I pulled the transfer roller out of this printer and put in a transfer roller from a working printer of the same model, and nothing changed. I'm sorry I don't understand what the dev unit is you are recommending to replace? Is there a part number? Thanks.

    You're quite correct that it's a "single-pass" inline process on these printers instead of the carousel, and the image drum is contained inside each toner cartridge. I did run "Calibrate Now" 4 times, as a forum suggested, and the image is ideal on each of the image drums of the toner cartridges. The calibration pages have color across each page (except black is only on the right side of the black calibration page) but the color coverage is wavy on the left side of the magenta, cyan and yellow calibration pages, like a "watery surface" appearance. I will go back to the school and check all the contacts I can see inside, as you suggest. Thank you for the diagrams. I will try to enlarge them for better viewing.     Just thought I would report what repaired this problem of no printing black on the left side of each page. I called HP and paid for the $39 repair assistance. The lady at HP walked me through all the things we have been through in attempting to get the black to print on the left side of the paper. Nothing worked until she suggested I put a folded up piece of paper in the top of the door above the transfer unit. It wouldn't stay closed with the folded up paper there, so I held it closed while it printed - and there was a faint showing of black on the left side, finally. Still we couldn't get it full black printing on the left.

    So the next morning I tried folding up four pieces of paper into fourths, which was 16 layers of regular, plain paper, and putting the "pad" of folder paper taped down in the cavity of the door beneath the transfer kit to press the transfer belt into the image drums of the toner cartridges. That worked. We now have full printing on the entire page.

    When I phoned HP back to explain that was the fix - to put in a pad of paper that would press in on the transfer belt, they offered a door assembly that would fix this problem more professionally, for $15 from HP, part #RC1-1574-000CN - Front Cover Assembly. I have not purchased that part due to the fact that the printer is working so well and I've spent so much time trying to find an answer, so I'll just leave it alone since the users are very happy to finally have their color printer working. Thank you to all who tried to help me.

The folded paper solution for for me. Thanks to all for sharing!!!!

I had the same problem. No black or cyan on the left side of the pages. From this advice... I folded a stack of 4 pieces of paper in half and then half again. I took out the transfer unit and put the folded paper in the upper left corner and then put the transfer unit back in. WORKS BEAUTIFULLY! Thanks you all sooooo... much!

I would suggest you try replacing the dev unit itself. This should rectify the loss of density on the one side. If you need a service manual for assistance with changing the dev unit, try they will likely have one. I presume you have also checked the laser lens to see there is no toner spilled onto it? This usually only accounts for thin areas of blank print.

    I may have misled you by referring to the part as a dev unit. I work mostly with Epson machines and often use their terminology in the wrong situation.

    I believe after having read further on the CLJ 3500 that the dev units are part of the colour cartridges as this machine uses the inline printing method rather than a carousel method.

    You say you have done a print-stop test (Did you run a calibration from the menu? If not - run one now) and found that the image is correct on the drum, but when transfered to the paper is faulty. This would suggest that the Secondary Transfer process is bad.

    The first area to check for a resolution to this is the bias contact to the High Voltage PCB. Check all the contacts in the area of the colour carts, ITB and transfer rollers. make sure they are not bent or dirty and are in good order.

Hi there in the paper handling menu check the paper size settings as it maybe as simple as the incorrect paper size has been set in the machine

Colors faded on left side of paper black and blue

Is it possible for you to clean the printheads manually with cotton buds and cleaning solution on this unit. Clean all thoroughly and this might just correct issue.
