Question about JVC AV-32D305 32" TV

1 Answer

There are faint lines at the top of the screen when the TV is on.

The TV is a JVC 32" bought in 2001. It started as lines at the top of the screen when the TV was initially turned on. Now these lines remain at the top of the screen. The TV still works fine. It seems thou that the lines are more abundant. What could be wrong?

There are capacitors in the set's vertical output circuit that need to be replaced. TV repairs should be handled by a professional because of the hazards involved, particularly with larger sets. This is a pretty minor repair, probably under $100.

The caps will do the trick. I've seen that a lot in over 15 years on the road and in the shop. You'll find the caps around the vertical output IC heatsink. I'd suggest just changing all the electrolytic caps around there (only 6 or so) as they are cheap and you're in there anyway. A google search for your specific TV model and "vertical retrace" might turn up a list of part locations and values for you. Good luck!

The faint white lines at the top of the screen is the warning that the pump-up capacitor in the vertical output circuit is going bad and the output itself is about to short out. When the TV stops working, the vertical output IC has finally shorted out. Replacing the vertical output IC, the pump-up capacitor and possibly a small value resistor next to the flyback (B+ for the v-out) should bring the set back to life.

Faint horizontal lines in picture

This is usually caused by a problem in the Horizontal Output section, around the Horizontal Output transformer usually a capacitor or diode going or gone faulty... the line you see are the Horizontal "Retrace" lines that are useually "Hidden" when the circuit is OK..

JVC AV-32F704 32" TV Picture is blurry - cannot read any writing on the screen

You didn't mention if you saw fine white diagonal lines running through the screen from top to bottom. If so, you likely have a shorted Picture Tube which is not usually fixable. If there are no lines seen running through the screen, then it is possible the High voltage transformer which also has a screen voltage and focus control built in that could be bad. I would expect the cost of that part to be about $100, so the repair cost total could approach that of a new set I would guess.
