Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My Back-UPS 500 Surge Protection & Power Back-up (model BK500M) once in a blue moon beeps (once every 4 months) then my PC shuts off immediately. Is this normal? However it looks like there was no power cut as other electrical appliances were not reacting at the time of the shut off.

Hi, I have a APC UPS and occasionally it goes into a beep mode. First; Open the case, on mine it is the removal of one Philips screw to slid the battery cover off, then check the battery voltage. These batteries do not last forever. Mine was showing 13.8 volts so I knew it wasn't the battery. I unplugged the unit from the wall outlet, pushed the reset button and then plugged the unit back into the wall outlet. This seems to reset the UPS and everything was fine again.

SOURCE: Belkin UPS F6C800 Problem

Just a general point. any ups is designed to deliver power inside its design parameters. any load outside its design parameters will cause it to shutdown or in the case of more expensive models it will go to bypass, some models will then recover and go back to inverter.

eg stable overload
peak overload
load outside its normal crest factor
short circuit

SOURCE: APC UPS 1500 w/full load forces immediate reboot at pwr failure

Hello,

With a 980watt load the run time is only 7 minutes on a brand new battery. If you have the system on full load your run time will be much less and it has likely damaged the battery. here is the APC web site page for your model. If you are running that much equipment I think you need either a bigger UPS or another 1500 and spread the load out.

SOURCE: I have an Ativa battery UPS surge protector model

I have found your user manual here: http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/KBOK-76HP9K_R0_EN.pdf

It looks like a re-badged APC unit, so the problem is either the battery is dead (probaby likely no matter what) and unable to support the load, or an overload condition is detected.

it is also possible the unit has gone faulty, but without more information I can not be sure.

If the manual does not help or you are still not sure, give me some more information before rating and I will continue to try to help.

Power supply malfunctioning

Most surge protection power boards will protect computer equipment from mains spikes and surges.
A better and more expensive solution is to use an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). These units provide surge and spike protection and also provide power in the event of mains power failure.
Make sure you select an UPS model that meet the power requirements of all your computer equipment that is connected to the UPS with a mains down time of say 1/2 hour to give you time to shut down your computer in an orderly manner.

I am not sure on the outlets on the back of this unit.
It is likely that the outlets on the back of the (UPS) are labeled, some battery backup (UPS) and the rest are surge protection only (no UPS).
Of the 3 UPS units I have, on each unit, only about half of the outlets give UPS protection.
The rest are surge protection.

Let me know it this helps you.

Need information

The Back-UPS is fairly straight-forward. The 9-pin connector (at the top of the back) is a serial port (RS-232) for the UPS data (when connected to a computer it will shut down the computer safely during a power outage). The next plugs are RJ-11 telephone jacks; the cord from the jack (wall) goes in on the left (some models have RJ-45 for network protection). The battery protected outlets are the three surrounded by black paint. The other three provide surge-protection only. Do not plug items like printers and scanners into the outlets that provide battery protection.

I hope this helps.

Strange noise comes out from the ups after a power cut

The Back-UPS Office unit has five different tones or alarms:

1. Four beeps every 30 seconds (On Battery LED will be illuminated)
This alarm indicates that the Battery Power Supplied outlets are now supplying battery power as opposed to power from the utility. If the UPS determines that the input utility power is unsafe for your computer equipment, the UPS will switch to battery power.
Note: If the power disturbance is brief, you may only hear one or two beeps.

2. Continuous Beeping (On Battery LED will be illuminated)
This alarm indicates that a Low Battery condition has been reached and that the UPS will soon shutdown. Once the UPS transfers to On Battery operation, it can only stay on battery for a limited amount of time. The UPS will sound this alarm about two minutes before the batteries are totally exhausted. Once exhausted, the UPS will shutdown and turn off its output power to your equipment. If you hear this tone you should immediately shutdown your computer to prevent data loss or corruption.

3. Continuous Beeps for 30 seconds (Back UPS OFFICE 250 and 280 ONLY)
This alarm indicates the unit has detected an Overload condition after it has performed a self-test during start-up.

4. Continuous Two-Tone Beep
This alarm indicates a severe Overload was detected while the unit was on-battery operation. This tone will continue to sound until the unit shuts down.

5. Continuous Tone (On Battery LED will be flashing)
This alarm indicates that the battery-powered outlets are overloaded.

6. Continuous Tone (On Line and On Battery LEDs flashing) Back UPS OFFICE 350, 400, and 500 ONLY
This alarm indicates that an internal UPS fault has occurred.

Sounds like the internal battery of the UPS needs replacement. Contact APC and ask for a qoute for a replacement battery/service. It'll probably work out a cheaper to buy new.

Make sure you dispose of the old unit properly if you do replace

Beeping noise

I've had the Dell 1720dn at my desk for years. Worked flawlessly. Moved it to a different workstation and it began beeping immediately while printing. Another site said to plug it directly into the wall, instead of a battery backup. I unplugged it from the battery backup outlet, and plugged into a surge protector only outlet on the same battery backup unit.... NO MORE BEEPING. Hope this helps someone else.

APC UPS no power

The unit might have a dead battery, blow fuse, or a bad board.
Your best bet is to talk to an APC rep. Worst case, APC has a trade in program, and can give you a discount on a new one.
Good luck.
