Question about Campbell Hausfeld 28 - Gallon Air Compressor

2 Answers

I have a CH Model WL611200AJ 6.25 HP with 30 gallon tank. When I power up, it tries to run at a very low pressure then kicks off after a few seconds. I can restart over and over and it does the same thing. Are there any switches or relays that could need to be cleaned.

Its the capacitor. If you leave it on dose your surge breaker go off? if so its99% a cap. and will run you about $15 -$20 or you may find it used at a surpluseselectronic store.

There Should be two Capacitors try the big one first. It should be in a gray cylinder once you open the cover

Sounds like a motor problem. If you have a capacitor, it could be bad, or a centrifigal switch inside the motor needs adjustment, which is tricky to do.
An "off the wall" problem could be the pressure switch is just set too low, be sure you have a good pressure gauge before adjusting that,( range: 100-125 PSI)

Hello David. Did you ever figure out your problem? I believe that I have the same issue with my compressor kicking off.

My 1/2 hp mastercraft pump cycles ever 3 seconds roughly. The pressure switch is set at 40-60psi. Should I replace or upgrade my pressure tank?

You might want to make sure you have proper air volume in pressure tank.

Shut down system. Drain tank. Fill tank with air via Shrader valve on top of tank until it has a few less psi than the low cut off setting. This will ensure that the tank still has water in it with some pressure still pushing it out when the pump kicks back on.

Without that cushion of air, the pump short cycles. ie every 3 seconds.....

Yes I think you may be right, it could quite well the thermal switch,"pressure controlled on/off"switch and is not properly set up, minimum and maximum stop/start.
If what I see in the photo, the pressure switch is beside the top tank with a pressure gauge on it, and the electrical supply should feed into/from it.

Hope this gives you a little food for thought, and hope that it is a little helpful

I have a 30 gallon stand up craftsman. It runs good in cool weather but once the temp gets higher in the area it will run for one tank then kick the breaker from the power ever time. I have to wait a few...

To me sounds like the breaker, or power supply is not enough for unit. Cool temps will slow the juice down, on a solid copper wire. but once its heated to max, your done.I would check the power supply first. Also, check for a drain, could be kicking cause its full of water.

Compressor comes on then stops wait a min comes on again and imediatly stops again

If you are using the air supply between when it stops and when it comes on again, then this might be normal. You havent mentioned what model/size compressor you have, but if is only a small 1-4 Gallon tank model, then these dont really hold a lot of air, and if you are using any air tool that uses a lot of air, you will be exhausting the tank supply VERY quickly, so the compressor fires up again to refill the tank.

If the compressor is only staying on for a split second after it fires up again, try plugging the compressor in directly to a wall outlet (ensuring the outlet is properly rated) and avoid using extension cords, which can leave the compressor with little power to overcome the tank pressure to kick over and refill. Compressors are best run directly connected to a main outlet, not via an extension cord.

There may also be a problem with the switching/regulating mechanism for the motor if it is jumping on and off in rapid succession. Check your regulator/tank pressure gauge. Take note of what pressure it kicks back on at, and what pressure it stops at. Many compressors will kick back in when the tank pressure drops to 80 PSI, and may stop when the pressure reaches 100-120 PSI.

I hope that helps!

I have an Ingersoll Rand T30 10 HP compressor that runs OK and will bulid up 150 psi without any problems. But when the pressure drops enough to kick the pressure switch, the motor won't start. just tries...

When the compressor comes up to pressure and kicks off, you should normally hear a gasp of air escaping. That gasp is the release of pressure from the compressor itself - not the tank, and it is supposed to get released so that the compressor can restart without being preloaded with compressed air. My guess is that the gasp is not happening. It is probably some debris or a gummy mechanism. The mechanism is supposed to be triggered by the same mechanism that shuts off the motor.
