My Canon started getting the 'memory card error' message when I was recently on vacation and was working on and off, but now has completely stopped working. The camera is about 9 months old, and has new batteries, I even tried a new internal 1220 3V battery. I've tried 3 different SD cards, all which work fine in another digital camera we have. I've tried switching the lock on and off. I can't re-format the memory card in the camera because that option is somehow disabled. I tried cleaning the internal contacts with a piece of paper, and it looks like all the pins are aligned correctly. It seems like it would cost more to get this serviced than to buy another camera...
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Try a smaller memory card size . I was trying to install a 4gb card and the guy at Kmart told me to try a 1gb card and that fixed the locked card error . No where in the instruction book did it address this problem.

It's a lost cause. The A540 works with SD cards. While SDHC cards will fit into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work in devices not designed for them. You need to stay with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.
Cards are coming in different formats and it might be possible that you brought a card which is not suitable or functional with your camera. The other reason could be that we are having options to lock our memory card in digital camera and you might have taken out your earlier card without unlocking it. The system might be broken from inside and this could be a reason that you are still getting a message that memory card is locked. It seems possible based on problem you are sharing.
I was happily using Cannon IXUS 750on one of my long vacations when the memory card almost got full. perhaps I clicked once or twice to take a picture when the card was full. ever since the camera displays Memory Card Error.
These are almost all the photos I took on my camera since a long time now. Could anybody pleeeese help me in retrieving my photos and recordings?
So as not to spoil your vacation, go buy yourself a new compact flash card locally. They should sell them anywhere electronics are sold, including WalMart, etc. See if you can get this new card to work in your camera. If so, then you can work on trying to get your current CF to work, by trying to format it in the camera.
If you can't get a new CF to work in the camera, then you likely damaged either the pins in the CF socket in the camera, or some switch that is pushed when the card is inserted (to tell the camera there is a card in it). It is unlikely you will be able to have this fixed during your vacation, unfortunately.
