Re Drive Chain on Greenfield 11.5 30 Mk 2a
I wish to fit a new drive chain. There is a large sprocket inside the rear left (from the rear)when and a small sprocket forward of the rear left wheel. The seems to be two adjustments at the rear to tighten the chain but I need to move the axle forward to put the chain on. I have tried brute force and sheer bloody ignorance. They do not seem to work. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

take chain off -- lay on floor --pull taught end to end push together --if it flexes more that one quarter of a inch --chain is worn --replace chain--also see how deep chain sits on sproket--- if sits too deep sprokets are wore and need replacing
Check that the chain brake is in disengaged position by moving the front hand guard towards the front handle. Remove the bar nuts and remove the clutch cover (chain brake). Take off the transportation ring. Fit the bar over the bar bolts. Place the bar in its rearmost position. Place the chain over the drive sprocket locate it in the groove on the bar. Begin on the top edge of the bar.
Make sure that the edges of the cutting links are facing forward on the top edge of the bar. Fit the clutch cover (chain brake) and locate the chain adjuster pin in the cut-out in the bar. Check that the drive links of the chain fit correctly on the drive sprocket and that the chain is in the groove on the bar. Tighten the bar nuts finger-tight. Tension the chain by turning the chain tensioning screw clockwise using the combination spanner. The chain should be tensioned until it does not sag from the underside of the bar. The chain is correctly tensioned when it does not sag from the underside of the bar, but can still be turned easily by hand. Hold up the bar tip and tighten the bar nuts with the combination spanner. When fitting a new chain, the chain tension has to be checked frequently until the chain is run-in. Check the chain tension regularly. A correctly tensioned chain ensures good cutting performance and long life.
Release the chain brake. Remove the nuts/bolts that hold the right hand cover over the drive end of the bar. With the cover off, the bar will slide back toward the engine and allow the chain to be removed. Note the direction of the cutting teeth! Clean the side of the engine where the bar fits to, and the small oil passages in the bar drive end that run from the large holes out to the chain groove on each edge. Also clean the entire chain groove. Fit the new chain to the sprocket, then insert the bar and work the chain onto it. Pull out on the bar until the chain fits fairly tight, then fit the cleaned cover over the drive. You may have to change the position of the chain adjustment screw a few turns to allow the adjustment 'tang' to drop into one of the large holes in the bar. Make sure the cover is fully seated, then run the fasteners down finger tight. Turn the chain adjuster screw CW until the chain pulls up to the bottom edge of the bar, but not so tight that you can't turn the chain by hand. Tighten the fasteners fully and recheck chain tension. Start the engine and run the tip of the bar near some cardboard at speed for a moment or two--proper oiling is indicated by a thin line of oil thrown onto the cardboard. Be sure to keep the chain teeth sharp and properly adjust chain tension--don't allow it to droop when cutting. Hope this helps!
Remove the bar and chain completely. Clean the entire case side where the bar fits as well as the bar drive end oil passages--especially the small channels the send oil out to the chain groove on each side. Back off on the chain adjustment by several turns, then fit the cleaned cover onto the saw after installing the bar and chain. Make sure the adjustment 'tang' fits into one of the large holes in the bar end. Fasten the cover screws/nuts down finger tight, then adjust the bar out until the chain pulls up to the lower run of the bar, but not so tight that you can't move the chain by hand. Tighten the cover fasteners firmly, then recheck chain tension. If ok, do a test cut on a log. Good luck!
Release the chain brake if equipped. Remove the drive end cover plate from the rear of the bar. Remove the bar and chain. Lay the chain out on a table or bench to inspect for sideways bending, breakage, or drive tooth damage. Inspect and clean the bar and it's oil passages in the drive end, particularly the small passages that run out to the chain groove from the large oil holes on each side. Inspect the drive sprocket for any tooth damage. Run the motor without the bar and chain for a few moments--oil should ooze out of a port on the side of the motor case where the bar fits to. If all ok, insert the bar into the space for it, pass the chain over the sprocket with the bottom run of teeth cutting toward you, and work the chain over the bar. Pull the bar outwards to tighten the chain, and fit the cover back in place (you may have to back off [CCW] the chain adjustment screw several turns). Fit clamp nut(s) (bolts) finger tight, then adjust the chain screw CW until the lower chain pulls up to the bar, but not so tight that the chain can't be moved by hand. Tighten the cover nuts and recheck chain tension. Make sure the chain is fully and carefully sharpened as a dull chain will quickly loosen due to heat and be thrown off again. Hope this helps!
Remove the side cover over the chain drive area. Remove the bar and clean the entire mounting area. Run the saw for a few moments to assure that oil is oozing out of the side port where the bar mounts. Lay the chain out on a bench or table and inspect it for sideways bending, damaged or missing links/teeth, and deformed drive teeth. Inspect the drive sprocket for damage as well. Clean the oil passages in the bar end including the two channels that go out to the chain groove. If all looks well, place the bar back into position and push it back. Fit the chain over the sprocket, then work it over the bar and pull the bar out to tighten the chain. Fit the cleaned cover over the case and make sure the adjustment tang drops into one of the large holes in the bar end--you may have to back off the adjustment screw several turns first. Fit the cover and tighten the mounting hardware finger tight. Make sure the chain cuts toward you on the bottom run. Tighten the adjustment screw until the chain pulls up to the lower bar edge, but still allows the chain to be moved by hand. Tighten the cover hardware and recheck the chain tension. Run the tip of the bar near some cardboard for a few moments--it should throw off a thin line of oil on the cardboard. Make sure the chain is properly sharpened. Hope this helps!
Remove the drive end cover by removing the large nuts/bolts. Remove the bar and run the motor for a few moments, which should reveal oil oozing out of a side port where the bar fits. If ok, then spread out the chain so that it can be inspected for any damage that may have occurred. Check the bar itself for any damage. Clean all of the parts including the oil passages in the drive end of the bar and the entire chain groove. If there is a sprocket on the bar end, make sure it turns freely. Check the drive sprocket teeth for extreme wear or damage. If all ok, insert the bar and push it back toward the motor. Then thread the chain over the sprocket, then over the bar. Pull the bar out, replace the cover with mounting hardware finger tight and make sure the adjustment 'tang' fits into one of the large holes in the bar. The chain teeth need to cut toward you on the lower run of chain. Adjust the chain until the chain pulls up to the bar, but can be pulled by hand. Tighten the mounting hardware and recheck chain tension. Make sure the chain is properly sharpened. Hope this helps!
First, check the chain for any bending (sideways), or broken/damaged links/teeth. If ok, clean the drive area and the oil passages in the drive end of the bar, then fit the bar and push it back toward the saw. Place the chain over the sprocket (which you checked for any damage as well), then work the chain over the bar (make sure the bottom run of chain cuts toward you). Pull the bar out as far as the chain permits, then fit the cover making sure that the adjustment tang fits into one of the large holes and run the mounting fasteners up finger tight. Turn the adjustment screw CW until the chain pulls up to the lower side of the bar, but it can still be pulled by hand. Tighten the fasteners firmly and recheck the chain. Finally, run the tip of the bar near some cardboard for several moments--it should throw off a thin line of oil onto the cardboard. Hope this helps!
Remove the chain drive side plate and remove the bar. Clean the drive area and inspect the drive sprocket for excessive wear. Run the motor for a short time to make sure that oil is being pumped out to the bar--is should just ooze out. Clean the bar chain groove and clean the oil holes at the drive end of the bar--especially the two small holes that go from the large oil holes out to the chain groove. Back off the chain adjustment screw several turns, then fit the chain over the sprocket (teeth cut toward you on the bottom) and then insert the bar into the chain and push the bar out till the chain is fairly tight. Apply the side cover and make sure the adjustment tang drops into the large hole at the rear of the bar. Install the mounting nut(s) to hold the plate and bar together. When run-up finger tight, turn the adjustment screw CW until the chain becomes tight enough that it doesn't droop from the bar, yet can be be turned by hand. Tighten the side cover nut(s) and recheck tension. If ok, run the saw for a few moments with the bar tip near some cardboard--it should throw off a thin line of oil. Keep the chain properly sharpened to reduce the chance of this occurring again. Hope this helps!
