Strange Printer Issue - HP Laserjet 2600n

I am having a extremely strange printer issue with one of our users here. We have a hp laserjet 2600n setup on the network. We setup the printer on the computer as a local printer using a tcp/ip port. When we first setup the printer it will print the test page at the end of the install just fine. Any attempts to print after that will not work. There is no errors on the printer or the computer indicating that something may have gone wrong.

We have multiple users connected the the printer and this issue only happens to one user. We even changed out her computer with a new one with a fresh install of xp pro and the issue is still there. We have also tried different drivers and restarting the printer. Any insight to what may be causing this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The setup wizard has be run correctly. We have set the printer up on other computers the exact same way and we have had no issues with them.

  • rzitello Apr 23, 2009

Sorry, it is Technically a "network printer". It has a built in jetDirect that responds on 192.168.1.20. The local spooler has been cleared out and restarted and when printing it seems to pass through the spooler and send to the printer with no issue.

  • rzitello Apr 23, 2009

Yes the printer will respond to pings just fine from the computer.

  • rzitello Apr 23, 2009

No after the initial test page during setup is printed it will not print any other pages from any program including another test page. If I reinstall it will print during the install but wont printer after that.

  • rzitello Apr 23, 2009

The address and all other information has been typed correctly. I've doubled checked it multiple times.

  • rzitello Apr 23, 2009

I've cleared out any previous installs and I have even go into the registry and cleared out any old drivers.

  • rzitello Apr 23, 2009

The printer is not showing any errors at all.

  • rzitello Apr 23, 2009

The spooler seems to respond normally. There are no warnings or errors in the event viewer concerning printers. The other printers she is connected to are: HP P2035, HP P2015, and BizHub550. All those are shared network printers. She also uses the CutePDFwriter.

  • rzitello Apr 24, 2009

We have Tried recreating the port a couple times now to see if that fixes it but it doesn't seem to be working. We are working on swapping the network cables for her computer to see if that does anything.

The last time I checked, you cannot set up a local printer using a TCP/IP port. A local printer is physically connected to a computer via a parallel, serial (very old), or USB cable. If the printer is connected to a switch, hub, or router via an Ethernet cable, it is by definition a network printer and the driver install must reflect this. I don't understand why it is able to print out the test page after the install. If you open up Control Panel -> Printers and double-click on the HP Laserjet 2600n in there, it will bring up the local spooler for the printer. You may have a bunch of print jobs queued up in there that it cannot currently send to the printer. You may want to clear the queue first (cancel all print jobs). Let me know if you have problems clearing the queue & I can give you instructions on how to do that one too.

Can you ping the printer from that computer?

  • ultimitloozr Apr 23, 2009

From the affected computer, can up pull up the properties page for the printer or send another test page?

  • ultimitloozr Apr 23, 2009

Since the driver cannot communiocate with the printer but the printer responds to ICMP requests it leads me to believe that there was a typo when entering the address (a comma instead of a period, etc.). I can't count the number of times I've done that one! Can you pull up the printer properties to verify the printer's IP address?

  • ultimitloozr Apr 23, 2009

Open up Device Manager. In the View menu, check the 'Show hidden devices' option. The list of devices should automatically refresh and you should see a section for Printers. Open that up and see if there are any remnants of previous installs of the printer there. If there are, uninstall them, restart the computer and attempt to print again.

  • ultimitloozr Apr 23, 2009

In the device manager again, is there any kind of error condition indicated in the Device Status box on the General tab of the printer's property pages? (It displays differently here than any other location where you can view printer properties.)

  • ultimitloozr Apr 23, 2009

Can you send a large enough print job so you can watch the spooler responses? Are there any entries regarding printing in the Event Logs other than informational about jobs entering/leaving the spooler? Are there any other printers configured for use on this system, are they HP models after the LJ6 series (different driver architecture used), and do they work?

  • ultimitloozr Apr 23, 2009

Well, it isn't a problem with the HP UPD since the other HP printers are working. The only other thing I would suggest is to open up the printer properties, go to the Ports page, unselect the current port it is using and use the Add Port... button to create a new standard TCP/IP port. Had that type of problem with a plotter about 10 years ago. Both were configured identically, but it wouldn't use the one the installer created.

Right now, I'm attempting to break a similar setup here to reproduce the problem. No luck so far, but I'll keep trying....

Hp laserjet 3000 screen does not work and pc cannot find printer

If your printer is a HP Color Laserjet 3000n the issue you are having may lay within a small complact flash card on the Formatter board. The only reason I sugjest this is because I am currently working on one and when I removed the card and started the printer up the LCD would not display. But you could also have a bad DC Controller card.

Try printing a test page from the printer itself. This will determine if it's a communication issue or the printer itself
