Our GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven door has developed a scratch on the inside, exactly where the bottom of the door meets the oven floor. This was covered by a thin veneer and while I did not use any abrasive product, it has just worn through.
I cleaned the oven gently as needed, and had just recently wiped it clean. Then when I next used it, it make a horrible noise as it came on, so I stopped it immediately and looked for the source.
Even though it is about ten years old, we don't use the microwave all that often, so I would prefer to repair rather than replace. I don't know the model number but it has an exhaust hood.
Can we just put a strip of tape over the scratch? If so, what would be best: adhesive, masking, duct, etc. I know we should avoid anything with nylon fibers as that could ignite.
Thanks.

The inside of the door must come apart. Be careful that screen inside the door is actually a choke to keep the microwave radiation in. Make sure that you replace each and every screw and everything else just as you took it apart.
Do you mean "sparks" inside the oven cavity when it is operating ?
If so, check for grease spots on the wave guide cover or scratches on the oven liner. Scratches can be touched up with touch up paint and wave guide cover`s can be replaced.
The in side door panel ( at total pain) must come off
If the damage to the bottom is not too bad. On mine I took the cover for the handle loose from the bottom ( it pops off, but be careful). and put screws at the bottom
Check behind the grill on the front top of unit. you can remove it by takign out a few screws from the top. There may be an access door there, if not unit would have to be pulled down and the case taken apart.
just use sand paper to clean the rust then use some high temperature paint (sold in tins) eg spray paint but it must be labeled high temperature and spray 2 to 3 coats . your microwave should be safe again
pop the plastic off inside door you will see 2 screws that hold handle on or if your trying to get the door hinges off unscrew bottom panel to access bottom hinge screw and vent at top to access screws for top hinge
