FireLite FWFL40 - need to upgrade the HD

I want/need to upgrade the HD in my 3 year-old FireLite 40Gb and I would appreciate input on:- a) what type(s) of drive(s) are compatible (I realise they need to be 2.5inch) - it has been suggested that only Toshibas products can be fitted? b) is there a maximum capacity limit for such an upgrade? Any help hugely appreciated.

Re: FireLite FWFL40 - need to upgrade the HD

Hi, Your basically correct, the only requirement is to physically fit the enclosure (2.5inch), other than that, hard disk capacity is a matter of your personal preference/need; Toshiba is one of the better brands. Others are Seagate, Maxtor to name a few. I guess it's a matter of who can provide better after sales support. Hope this be of help/idea. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

Where can I purchase the cord for my FWFL40-N to be used with a MacBook Pro?

I have a firelite USBFLB60 60gb. My cord broke, so I just ordered "Cable Wholesale USB Type A Male / Mini-B Male Cable, 5 Pin, Black, 1 ft" from Amazon for very cheap. I think that is the correct adapter, and I imagine it would be the same for yours.

Hard drive replacement

There is several ways for upgrading your external HDD's you just need a srewdriver and a lot of experience with reassembeling. Find bigger HD replacment for that one and with it in package you should also get manual instructions on how to fit it inside your SmartDisk Ext hdd case.

I have a firelite model USBFLB40-C it was working fine yesterday but today I can't access it. The light blinks but my computer nor two other computers recogize it. I have about 15 GB of information I need...

Hi Terry,

We can definitely help you with this issue. If the drive has been tested on more than one computer you have already finished the first diagnostic for us. The next step is to remove the harddrive from the enclosure and install it in a new enclosure as this is the next most likely solution.

If you do not have the skill/tools to safely perform the operation pop into your local PC shop and ask one of the technicians to move the old 40GB drive into a new enclosure for you to test if the drive is working. If it is working in the new enclosure buy it and be on your way. I would also suggest buying a new external as 40GB drive must be at least 3-4 years old and mean time to failure averages 5 years.

If they test the drive and it doesn't work in the new enclosure, reply back with your Country, State and City and I will refer you to an appropriate pro who can recover the data for you.

Either way let me know how you make out,

FireLite FWFL40-N (Firewire) External HD wont turn on PC or MAC

Make sure the poer adaptor you use is rated for the same or better in terms of current. The instruction for the drive tell you what this is but for example it may be 5V 500mA in which case you need either the original power supply that is known to be working or another on that has those ratings (it does not matter if the mA or A is a little higher but never lower.

If its not the PSU then by all means dismantle it take the drive out and fit it into a pc to check the drive itself. If the drive comes up OK then you know for sure it is the enclosure and these are now cheap enough.

How to install seagate ata IV hardrive

The easiest way to upgrade from your old HD to the new 40Gb HD is to clone the old to the new. Do a google for "hard disk clone" freewares. Personally I use Partition Magic and have had very good results.

Hardware wise, you need to install the 40Gb as a slave to the old HD by connecting the same IDE cable as that of the old HD (you may have to remove your CD/DVD temporarily). You also have to temporarily remove the single jumper of the 40Gb to allocate it as a slave to the primary master (old HD). Plug in likewise the 4 wire power connector. On power up go to your CMOS/BIOS setup to verify that your PC autodetect the 40GB (you may have to do a manual detection). Boot your PC and go through the normal boot sequence. Thereafter download your clone software choice, install and run. Follow on screen instructions. You may need to reboot. After completion, use Windows Explorer to verify that everything has been copied. Power down, remove the old HD, relocate IDE cable connector of the old HD to the 40Gb, reconnect your CD/DVD, and place back the jumper of the 40Gb. On popwer up go again to your CMOS/BIOS to verify that the 40Gb & the CD are detected. Save & exit, reboot.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

My computer stopped detecting my hard drive

Hi, Based on your post/description: 1. Tried on 3 different computers - no go, so it's not a PC problem; 2. Tried replacing the cable - no go, so it's not an interface problem; 3. That leaves you only with the Firelite itself. An external hardrive would consist of 2 main parts, the electronic board and the hard disk itself. The board seldom (if ever) fails. Its function is to provide conversion/interface from the SATA/IDE connectors of the HD to the out USB/Firewire. The HD more often than not fails. Most external storage uses a standard HD inside the enclosure. Your possible options: a. Claim warranty/replacement; b. Replace the HD only; c. Physically remove the HD and connect it direct to a desktop either as IDE or SATA and run manufacturer's diagnostic and/or third party recovery software; d. Seek services of professional data recovery firms (if data/files are mission critical); Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
