Question about Craftsman Air Tools & Compressors

Air comp has trouble re-starting after coming up to pressure

I have an older craftsmen air comp that I would like to use as a back up but it has a problem. It will come up to pressure fine and you can use it. But when it tries to re-start after the pressure drops, it seems to have a hard time turning over and stalls out. You can hear the motor trying to turn but it does not. I removed the motor and cleaned the contacts but it still does the same thing. Rick.

Rick, I have come across this problem before and was related to the unloader mech. Follow the air discharge hose to the tank. There you will find the brass in-tank check valve. The check valve will retain pressure in the tank and not allow it to leak back and load the compressor. To test the valve, with pressure in tank, back off the air supply line from pump and check for leak. If leaking remove valve and clean debris or replace valve. Secondary to this valve is the unloader valve in the pressure switch. From the brass checkvalve follow the 1/4 inch line to the switch where you will find somewhat of a tire stem valve that is mechanically opened by a lever on the pressure switch. Make sure that when the compressor cycles off, the remaining air is the lineis unloaded at this stem. Make adjustments as necessary (by bending a small tab that depresses stem ). Good Luck with your repair and email if you have questions.

My craftsmen air compressor wont build pressure. How do i fix it?

If the unit will not build up pressure you need to remove the compressor head from the compressor and inspect both the intake and the exhaust reeds as well as the piston ting on the compressor.
Without the model number of the compressor this is about as far as I can help with.

your pressure switch is defective that controls the cycling of the motor, its fed air pressure off the tank line and opens and closes contacts to start and stop the motor to build air pressure when needed

Husky comp on 1st start builds up 75 lbs and wont restart

Check the reset button on the motor to see if it tripped. The motor may be overheating. Some motors have an internal breaker and they have to cool off before they restart. Also check the pressure switch. Move the switch back and forth ( on and off ) and listen for a click. If it doesn't click with low to no air pressure then the switch is bad.

Kicking overloads but not consistantly

First: Most all compessors use check valves at the tank and an unloader to allow the compressor to start without a load. Make sure that system is unloading and that check valve is not leaking causing head pressure at start. Second: Too frequent starts and stops will cause motor to overheat. Check Quincy manual for max starts per hour. enjoy

Cant set my compressor to automatic start/stop mode

U NEED TO ADJUST THE PRESSURE SWITCH ON THE BACKUP TO A LOWER PSI. TO COME ON AFTER THE PRIMARY. EXAMPLE: PRESSURE SWITCH ON PRIMARY COMP. SET AT 140-175 PSI AND BACKUP SET AT 135-170 PSI. U CAN USUALLY TURN ONE CENTER SCREW IN THE PRESSURE SWITCH COUNTERCLOCKWISE TO LOWER THE PSI.
