Ethernet port not functioning after lifghtening strike

Ethernet port not working after a lightning strike? Then I suggest obtaining an inexpensive Ethernet adapter card, and installing it.

One example of an Ethernet adapter card, (Ethernet Card, Networking Card - Same/same),

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1275962&CatId=200

The above Ethernet adapter card is a PCI style of adapter card. It plugs into any available PCI expansion slot on the Pavilion a620n's motherboard.

This is an illustration and photo of the Pavilion a620n motherboard from HP Support,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00069442&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&site=null&lang=en&key=null&product=424215

Scrolling to the middle of the page shows first the illustration, then the photo.
In the motherboard photo the three white long expansion slots on the bottom of the motherboard, are the PCI slots.

On this page is information on how to open the computer case, and replace, or install an Ethernet Card,

Trying to add 2 g of memory to a Visionman PD 945 Server. With 3 - 1 gig memory sticks it says it has 3064 mb of ram. When I add the 4th 1 g memory chip it says I have 3192 mb of ram?

Three times 1024, minus 8, is 3064.
The "missing" 8MB has been "stolen" as "video-memory" for the built-in video-adapter.

Since 3192 minus 3064 is 128, only the first 128MB out of the 1024MB is available to Windows.

It's the "design-architecture" of the 32-bit version of Windows which is the problem; hence, there is a 64-bit version of Windows which _fully_ recognizes more than 3GB of RAM, if, of course, the motherboard and CPU support 64-bit functionality.

I have a Dell XPS400 and can not connect to the internet because the machine does not have any installed network adapters. I have always had internet access...where do I find this adapter if I can't get...

This is onr example of a Network adapter, or also know as an Ethernet Adapter Card,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=686143&CatId=200

This is Dell Support >XPS 400 desktop computer > Service Manual,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps400/sm/index.htm

1) Work on a table. Computer off, and unplugged from power, open the computer case.

(Removing the Computer Cover, in the list)

2) Follow Anti-Static precautions.

[Anti-Static Precautions:

Your body carries Static electricity.
Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components, inside a computer.

To relieve your body of Static, TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case.
Should you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, upon your return be sure to Touch the metal frame again ]

3) View the motherboard inside your computer.
(The motherboard is also referred to as the Mainboard, {Proper speak}, and System Board)

Technical Overview > System Board Components,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps400/sm/techov.htm#wp1053398

Viewing the illustration of the motherboard, the Ethernet Adapter Card example I gave above, would go in either one of the PCI expansion slots.

These are white in color, and in the illustration are labeled - PCI Card Connectors.

If there is already an adapter card installed in both PCI expansion slots, then see if the PCI Express x1 expansion slot is open.

In reality, PCI Express is a better technology than PCI.

Shown on the motherboard as PCI Express x1 Card Connector.

This is an example of an Ethernet Card, (Ethernet Adapter Card), that uses the PCI Express x1 expansion slot,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4675156&CatId=200

The reason I have suggested buying, and installing an Ethernet Adapter Card is threefold.

1) You may have your Ethernet cable plugged into the Ethernet port of the computer,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps400/sm/about.htm#wp1053567

[Number 3 - Network Connector],

and the built-in Ethernet is no good.
Reinstalling drivers May help, but the above is a sure thing.

2) You have an Ethernet Adapter Card plugged into one of the PCI slots, or the PCI Express x1 slot, and the Ethernet adapter card is no good.
They do go bad, and are economical to replace.

3) There was an Ethernet Adapter Card installed previously, but taken out before you received the computer.

Adding a PCI ethernet card?

One port on the router is an "Ethernet" port -- look closely to see the 8 wires in the socket.

You'll need a similar 8-wire connector on your computer,
and an "Ethernet-cable" that has 8 strands of wire.

Adding-in the PCI Ethernet card will add an 8-wire connector,
so that the Ethernet-cable can be connected.

Be sure to buy a 'PCI' Ethernet adapter, not 'PCI-E', and not 'ISA'.
It may come with a CD-ROM containing software to be installed.

Don't pay more than $20. Or, find a "computer-geek" -- he/she probably will have one or more "spare" PCI Ethernet cards to give to you.

I updated my window vista OS.When I tried to install my Linksys Router I get the message Error 311 no wired adapter detected

Hi,

This could be the problem with your network driver which is overwritten by driver from Windows updates.

Try to overwrite by the .ini using device manager.

Get the compatible ethernet driver from your computer manufacture web site if dont have one.

Right click on MyComputer -> Manage -> Device Manager(expand the tree on the left side)

Under Network Adapters choose the ethernet wired adapter -> Update driver -> Choose Manually the .ini from the system where you stored the driver and update it.

Hope it will work fine
