MTH TIU will not record custom sounds via external microphone

Posted by on

  • Edward Taylor Oct 17, 2013

    The problem is resolved.
After a bunch of digging and talking with the MTH folks, it hit me that the "External Mic" option is only good for real-time transfer of sounds to the locomotive. i.e. Start the locomotive and then turn on the external mic to allow voice to be sent to the locomotive. As soon as any voice transmissions are complete the external mic must be turned off.
As indicated in the documentation that option consumes all of the resources of the TIU and thus the TIU CAN NOT be used to record a custom sound for use at a later time.
Note that the "Proto Dispatch" option, using the built-in
mic on the handheld, works but the audio is very weak. Several users have provided detailed instructions on how to increase the length of the RF Antenna in the TIU to improve the sound quality.
My solution is to record sounds on a cassette recorder and
then play those sounds through the "Proto-Cast" port on the TIU. It works like a champ.

SOURCE: Can I record in stereo via the microphone/line-in

The input-level from a (monophonic) microphone is MUCH less than the input-level from a device (cassette player?) connected to the (stereophonic) LINE-IN socket.

So, crank-up the slider, to amplify the input.

Make sure that you're connecting into the LINE-IN port, if you want to record in stereo.

My microphone not working

Dear,
Hardware troubleshooting Depending on whether you are using an internal or an external microphone, follow the steps below to see if the problem is with the hardware.Show all ' Hide allcollapse_individual_default.pngTest the internal microphoneThe internal microphone is located near the top of the notebook LCD display or near the bottom of the LCD display near the hinge. Use the following best practices to capture sound more easily.
  1. Adjust the notebook screen to place the microphone in the best direction for receiving sound.
  2. Click Start , enter sound in the search field and select Sound Recorder from the list.
  3. Click Record and speak into the microphone. Save the file to an easily-accessible location, such as the desktop.
  4. To play back the recorded sound, open the file using Windows Media Player.
  5. When using the internal microphone, choose an environment without background noise.
  6. If the recorded sound does not play back, continue to the next section of this document.
collapse_individual_default.pngTest the external microphoneVerify that the microphone port and the microphone are working properly.
  1. Test the microphone on a known, working portable tape recorder, another computer, or a device that accepts the microphone connector.
  2. Click Start , enter sound in the search field and select Sound Recorder from the list.
  3. Click Record and speak into the microphone. Save the file to an easily-accessible location, such as the desktop.
  4. To play back the recorded sound, open the file using Windows Media Player.
  5. If the recorded sound does not play back, continue to the next section of this document.
  6. If the microphone successfully records the voice, test the record function on the computer. If the microphone does not work properly on another computer or on a tape recorder, try using a different microphone.
collapse_individual_default.pngSet the default microphoneIf the external microphone is set as the default recording device, uninstall and reinstall the audio driver to change the default recording device to the internal microphone. The internal microphone should be the default recording device. To change the default recording device:
  1. Click Start , enter device into the search field, and then select Device Manager from the list.
  2. Expand the Sound, video and game controllers list.
  3. Right-click the audio driver , select Uninstall from the drop-down menu, and then click OK to confirm that you want to uninstall the audio driver.
  4. After the audio driver is uninstalled, click Start , enter backup into the search field, and then select HP Backup and Recovery Manager from the list.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall the audio driver.
The internal microphone is now set as the default recording device. Basic troubleshooting
The following are some basic troubleshooting tools that you can use to restore your microphone's functionality, depending on your operating system and/or software preferences. However, it is recommended that you first run the HP Support Assistant as it can scan your current system configuration to automatically determine if your notebook requires updated software and device drivers.

Hi. I am using the Tascam 2488Mkii in a very simple set up. I love the sound of the single effect reverb. I just want to record my vocal and accoustic with that effect (recording via microphone)....

If you own a small practice guitar amplifier with reverb, mic the amplifier and hook your guitar and microphone into it and run it into the board. You will get a better sound

What do i plug my external microphone into on the camcorder? the a.v. one?i think that one is for play back on a monitor. so how would i bypass the internal mic. and use an external one ?

Thanks for clarifying the model. According to the user manual, there is no facility for "sound in" on your camcorder. ALL SOUND recorded is via the stereo microphone at the front of the camera.

The AV socket is for a feed out only.

However, there are a couple of things you can do to improve your sound.....

You have the option (via menu setting) to reduce the "wind cut" (extraneous noise of the wind blowing across the
microphone).

You also have the option to "voice over" (they call it "voice plus") whilst dubbing to another recording device, but this doesn't overwrite or alter the original recording. For full details of how to do this, see the user manual page 89. (If yours is not to hand, its freely downloadable from many sites, including Retrevo).

Hope this helps.

Cannot get laptop microphone working

Double click on the little speaker icon on the Desktop toolbar at the bottom right of your screen. The volume control window will open. Click on options then properties. Next check the small round recording button. Now make sure he microphone box is checked then click ok. Now a window will open that will show your microphone recording level. Move the slider up about half way and make sure to check the small "Select" box near the bottom of the slider. Open up sound recorder or whatever application you are using and try to record. If this does not work I would get an external microphone plug it into your laptop and try recording again. If the external mic works then I would think that you internal microphone is not working. There are some very cheap external mics on the market that sound very good. If you are doing any serius recording you may want to invest in a USB microphone. The USB mic should come with it's own software and setup should be pretty simple. I hope I have been helpful.
