Question about Fisher and Paykel GWL11 Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Fisher and Paykel washer (IWL12) will not drain. There is also a burning smell. There is no water leaks. I removed pump motor. There are no burn marks and it spins freely. I looked at the motor controller on top of washer. There are no burn marks there. The diverter valve does not show any signs of burning.

It could still be the pump (the coil/winding may have a short.
try it out of the washer to see if it spins.. most are just 2 wire AC 220v

Look at my issue on "eco smart won't drain, smells hot". You could have same issue and your motor just hasn't burned up yet.

SOURCE: wont drain looked in pump area does nto appear to

After taking all apart and putting back together 3 times looking for some type of clog in the pump area I decided to take the hose off that is located underneath the washer. There I found a penny!

All better! I love my fisher paykel! I personally fixed it.....saved myself $95.00 per half hour and parts. Since i am a woman lots of times a repairman would have said I needed a new pump!

Tip

Mildew smell, gray streaks, won't drain, puddles on floor, burnt motor smell

I have had various issues with my fisher paykel top loader (GWL10US) and didn't realize they were all due to a plugged drain. I had mildew smell from excess water that never drained, gray streaks on clothes from dirt and residue that remained in tub, water left in tub and wet clothes after spin cycle, puddles on floor, and finally it wouldn't drain at all and the motor smelled hot/burned out.

This was all caused by a sock that got in between the outer/inner tub and went to the lowest part of the drain and finally blocked things so a leak was created and water dripped into the motor and caused a burn out.

To repair, bail water out of washer and unplug the washer. Tip machine back so you can see the motor/white plastic housing unit (pump) on bottom of washer. Where this unit attaches to the bottom of the washer, look for a clip/tab that you can pull with your finger (like a childproof cap) and twist the unit off the machine and unplug the connectors (there are 2). Once this unit is removed, you will see a quarter-sized hole into the bottom of the wash tub. this is where i found the elusive SOCK and pulled it through the hole.

When you order the "pump" it comes as one unit--motor and white plastic--and you twist it back onto the machine and plug in the connectors.

Burning smell

Hi just read your posting. Now in my experience on your model of machine when you get a burning smell it is usually the pump. When the machine is draining the water and goes to spin do you get a burning smell then? Please try to look underneath the machine to the front right. You will should see the pump with a red or black fan attached to it.See if has any evidence of corrosion or leaking. Please reply with additional information and I can guide you throe rectifying this fault.

During the rinse cycle, our GWL 11 Fisher & Paykel

The problem is in the pump, so it will not pump out, you will need to find another way to empty it, removing the agitator will make the job easier.
When you get the water out the pump can be accessed from underneath, it turns anticlockwise to remove it,.
I would buy a new pump as it is most likely that is all that is wrong with it.

I have a fisher paykel washer that is not drain/spinning properly and I noticed a burning/hot smell. Anything i can do? It is 5 yrs old.

ours did the same thing with the burning smell also. I found that the pump motor kept tripping out from overheating and would not empty the drum thus telling the computer not to spin. I took out the pump and found that the rotor inside the armature had surface rust all around it so i gave it a light sand to clear the rust and whalah...no more tripping out, the pump motor needs to be disassembled to get at the rotor.
