further info is that when the start button is pushed a low hum is made by the timer element. There is a noticeable click when the start button is pushed but the unit will not start.

First thing open the door and check the door switch, you should see a little paddle, push it in and out if it feels good and clicks it's good, now you want to go to the back of the dryer and where the cord connects to the dryer make sure you have 240 volts coming to the dryer,if you do go to the front .your lint filter is on the inside so you can do this from the front, unplug the dryer or kill the power to it,remove the bottom panel, get a screw driver and slide it in the hole between the bottom and door panel, you'll hit a clip, push the screw driver in on the top of the clip and pull the panel forwards, one on each side, then remove the lint filter and then remove the metal duct the filter slides into, clean this out,the reason why the dryer died is most likely from bad air movement, the dryer runs to hot and one of the thermostats will pop as a safety so you don't have a fire or anything like that, you'll need a meter, pull at least one of the wires off of the part you have to check for continouity,on top of the blower wheel housing you'll see a white piece, that's the thermal fuse, check that first,if that's good go to the heater box and check the t-stats on the left side of the box.you should find one of them bad.also when your done if your vent line is long go outside and make sure nothing is blocking the outside duct like a cage or screen,if it's clear go back inside remove the vent line from the back of dryer and stick a leaf blower into the vent line and blow it out.if you clean out the vent line the front cabinet and lint filter duct once a year you won't have to many problems with your dryer.let me know what you find

Kenmore dryer 592-89047 won't start

Sounds like the lint may have fallen into the fan and has jammed it. The motor will hum if that happens. Its an easy job to clean just take your time taking the blower cover off and reverse the process replacing it.
