Question about Radio Communications

1 Answer

I've brought a superstar 360fm ssb rig off ebay and when i was trying to tune the arial in the mic stopped keying up and i couldn't hear any one as if the mic was disconnected, it was a really old mic that came with the rig not the one that was new with the rig so i brought a brand new one for the superstar but its still the same, have i blown something, everything lights up the same?

SOURCE: when i talked no one can hear me but it move move the meter.

This may be a simple and very basic problem with all Cobra models. Honestly I wouldn't ever choose a Cobra, they're cheap radios. Instead buy a Galaxy or Uniden. But have you tried the Mic Gain? If not, turn the Mic Gain knob fully clock-wise and try asking for a radio check, if this doesn't solve it, you also might want to check the microphone's connecting ports, the connecting ports may be damaged or corrupted, if so, you can replace them by buying a new connecting port. If this doesn't work, your transmitter may be damaged or corrupted, this can be fixed, but it is expensive, you're better off getting a new radio. And don't forget, some truckers are dipshits (no offense) and ignore a lot of people.

SOURCE: trying wire a superstar dm-452

Hello bubba, the wiring code for the radio is
Mic Wiring
Stock
1- Shield
2- Audio
3- Transmit
4- Receive

Galaxy DC-521S (4 wire)
1- Shield
2- Yellow
3- Red
4- Black

If this is the power /echo mic like it looks to be from the Workman catalog, then I can't remember what the wiring code is for the mic. I do know, that the audio wire has the ground/shield wire wrapped around it.Could be just about any color. Put the shield on pin 1 and the audio wire on pin 2 and all you have left should be 2 more. If you get it backwards, then the radio will key up as soon as you turn it on. You'll have to key it to hear the speaker. Just reverse the 2 on pins 3-4. Hope this helps as it's been over a year since I've seen one. Let me know,,, Mechanic

try a stock mike or a noise canceling one. Hard to run power on top of power. And see what your radio is dead keying into the radio...usally with a 500 it can take up to a 6 watt dead key.

I want to wire my superstar dm452 power echo mic to my realistic trc 465 am ssb and need to know what color goes to what pin?

its a 5 pin which all radshack radios are and they are all,99% anyway, wired the same . So take an old radshak mic apart at the plug and see how it is wired then experiment from there.

Lost disc 1 for superstar in Expansion Pack Volume 3

Usually you play the sims with expansions by using the game disk of the last expansion you installed. Superstar definitely is supposed to have 2 disks and disk 1 is probably the one you need. I know eBay has several full copies for sale under $5 including shipping. Amazon does too.

On air oscillation?

Howdie gord, The way you descibe having to turn your mic. gain almost completely down, sounds as if some one has already gotten to one of the VR's.. This would also require the standard nylon tuning tools. You can google up the specs for the radio, just google the type & model, being sure to specify "mods" on the end. Like: Cobra 148 gtl mods... There are several hundreds of hits you will get. It sounds to me as if someone went in and turned 1 or more of your Variable Resistors in order to get more audio out of your rig! With a Watt and modulation Meter in line I would concentrate on the AM section of mods. Audio in particular. You should also be able to download the schematics for your rig. It will at least show you in relation to your antenna output symbol, where to find your VR's.. The audio is what I would work on 1st. It will say some thing like adjust VR14 or VR12 ect, to adjust your output audio. There are a Great Number of modifications for that rig. It should be checked by an FCC Certified Technician. But alot of Folk's just dive right in! These models, depending on the PLL Chip, may also be capable of talking "Out of Band", and Uncle Charlie is still very active, along with other HAMS in finding the Offenders. I have to say, that I can not stop you from trying to save a few bucks by making adjustments on your own. Dependable Radio Shops are getting pretty far apart now though.. But really gord, all the answers are on youtube, or google. On youtube, you at least get an idea of what you are looking for to cut the audio back down, and make the rig a little less responsive as far as your mic. gain knob goes! I have several Cobras, all SSB,AM, and a couple with FM. I stick with my Kenwoods and Collins gear though. I do like the 148gtl's alot, but they are not type excepted for HAM use!
Good Luck gord, and I Hope I have helped in some small way. I live outside of Atlanta, GA. There are alot of truck stops near by. Truckers will most times tell you who is got a Golden Screwdriver and who to stay away from. I wish you a lot of luck and SEASONS GREETINGS from W4Land! 73 P.S. Since no one has to know Morse Code any more, You could study online for Free at www.qrz.com to prepare for a HAM Ticket! It is Very Easy and Quick to get your Technicians Class now. I have a freind that is a Maritime HAM I need to get ready and try and reach him. He is out of Hong Kong by now, so ya'll have a Great Season. Collin...

I have a 3900 that has good signal but no audio check the mic and the plug out and all the joints all look good. Also checked the mic on another rig and it works fine.

Sounds like to me you regulator is bad, the dig three legged one in the back mounted to the side of the radio, if you have a meter check to see, outside legs should read 13 middle one at least 5 volts. This will cause you not to have key.
