Opening laptop zif connector

Hello, I have a Samsung R519 laptop which I want to clean because it is overheating. There is a flat flex cable which connects the DVD drive to the motherboard. This terminates in a Zif connector approximately one centimetre across. I am having trouble opening the Zif connector. There is a brown locking bar which holds the cable in place. There is a white plastic tab at each side of the bar. The bar does not unlock by lifting with a fingernail so I assume the tabs play a role. The tabs are cut in the shape of a staircase to match the shape of the locking bar. I have had a good look around but cannot find any help on this subject. Your asistance would be greatly appreciated. I don't know if I can post a link, but there is a photograph here

I looked at your picture, I've haven't seen one like that before. Sometimes manufacturers make it difficult or impossible to replace something without going back to the manufacturer. I would contact Samsung and see if this is the case with your problem.

SOURCE: Broken Touchpad ZIF Connector

Best bet is to obtain a faulty motherboard and use the clip from that - they are often sold very cheaply declared as faulty on ebay.

Can you lift the plastic bar at either side on the board where the cable was pulled from?.If so,just lift both sides,one at a time till the plastic bar is loose,then seat your cable straight down until it will go no further and then push both sides of the bar back down to secure the cable...hope that fixes your problem:)

Keyboard replace

Forgive me, not advertising for these guys,
(They say, "A picture is worth a thousand words")
As new as the Samsung Q430 series of Notebook PC's is, there should be only two different types of ZIF connectors on the motherboard, used for the Keyboard Cable. But may be three;
A ZIF connector is a Zero Insertion Force connector. The motherboard connector on a laptop, that the Keyboard Cable goes into, is a style of ZIF connector.
Usually composed of two parts; The bottom part is larger in size, and is Stationary to the motherboard. It is called the BODY.
The upper part is smaller in size, and is Movable. It is the Locking Bar. Uses the wedge principle when in the closed/locked position, to wedge the Keyboard Cable into the Body.
1) The newest style has no Locking Bar to release. The Keyboard Cable is gently, yet firmly, pulled on; and removed from the motherboard connector. To reinstall just line it up as it was originally, then push in.
2) I refer to this as the Flip-Up style;
3) And an older style. I refer to this style as the Slide style;
All you can see are two 'Tab's of the Locking Bar, on each side of the Keyboard Cable.
These Tabs are EASED up with your thumbnails. Ease up on one side a little, then the other side; then both sides.
Moves approximately 2mm. That is a little more than 1/16th of an Inch, or about the width of this capital letter -> O <-
IF,....the Locking Bar is broken, or IF,...the Body is broken; you are looking at MOTHERBOARD REPLACEMENT, and why I am being so detailed.
Note that other motherboard connectors, may use a ZIF connector of one of the types stated above, also.
Touchpad Cable, etc.
When replacing a Keyboard, line the flat bar terminals strips on the Keyboard Cable, back up to the contact pins in the motherboard connector.
The Keyboard Cable MUST go back in the same position, as it was originally. Therefore look at the old Keyboard, and it's cable; to orient the new Keyboard Cable correctly.

I am having trouble reconnecting the 4 connector FFC for my backlit keyboard.

Check the connection on the motherboard a little closer. There should be an unlockable part in the connector which you can slide back and forth in order to remove/fix the cable.

The Keyboard Cable STAYS attached to the Keyboard.
It disconnects FROM the motherboard's connector.

The Keyboard Cable has NO connector on the end. It is a FFC.
Flat Flex Cable.
One example of a Flat Flex Cable,

The flat metal terminal bars MUST be aligned back in the SAME position, as they were originally.
For this reason you may wish to take a Sharpee marker, and make a mark on one side of the cable.
Then make a matching mark on the same side of the motherboard connector, BEFORE you remove the cable.

The motherboard connector is a type of ZIF connector.
Zero Insertion Force.
It is composed of two pieces, but does NOT come completely apart!

The bottom part is larger, rectangular shaped, and is stationary to the motherboard.
It is the BODY.

The upper part is smaller, rectangular shaped, and is movable.
It is the Locking Bar.

ACCORDING to the video the Locking Bar is the Slide/Wedge type.

DO NOT use a metal tool as shown. One slip, and you can damage the motherboard! Geez!

Use your Fingernails, or Thumbnails.

The Locking Bar slides up. Up towards the LCD screen, or away from the Body.
It ONLY moves about 2mm. That is a little larger than 1/16th of an Inch.

IF, the Locking Bar is broken, or the Body, you are looking at

Hence why I am being so detailed.

More detail on unlocking this type of motherboard ZIF connector,

A) Locked position;

B) Unlocked position;

There is another style of Locking Bar used, however.
The Locking Bar flips up to a 90 degree position, or also can be stated as Straight Up.

Remove ribbon cable

1) Don't know of any daughterboard Donald.

( A Daughterboard connects to the Motherboard, as an extension of the motherboard. Components plug into the daughterboard as they would the motherboard )

That is a USB/ Audio/ Ethernet board,

2) The cables are FFC. Flat Flex Cable,

The connector/s on the motherboard are a style of ZIF connector.

The bottom of the rectangular connector is the BODY.
The top of the connector is the Locking Bar.

The Locking Bar wedges the Flat Flex Cable in place.

I HOPE you unlocked the Keyboard's Flat Flex Cable, BEFORE pulling on the cable!

The white tabs of the Locking Bar are just barely visible on each side, of that Keyboard FFC.
They are eased up with the thumbnails.

The Locking Bar DOES NOT COME OFF of the Body, or one of them is broken. If so, I hear the motherboard will skip off of water, REAL GOOD!
Or can be used for a one-way Frisbee.

The FFC's that go over the Harddrive, have a different style of ZIF connector, on the USB board.

The Black rectangular tab Locking Bar, flips up. Break the hinge pins, or the Locking Bar hinge areas, and use the motherboard for a Frisbee.

Removing the keyboard broke the plug

Never have seen a Keyboard's Flat Flex Cable, that had a connector on the motherboard end.

The motherboard connector is a type of ZIF connector. Zero Insertion Force. It is composed of TWO pieces, but DOES NOT come completely apart.

The bottom piece is the BODY. The top small piece is the Locking Bar.

IF, the Locking Bar is broken off, you may be looking at MOTHERBOARD REPLACEMENT.

Replace a keyboard

Most laptop keyboard are secured by screws on the bottom of the laptop. The screws that fix the keyboard may have a tiny heyboard symbol against the screw.
When you remove the keyboard screws you can then lift the keyboard off the laptop. The keyboard is connected to the motherboard via a flat ribbon cable, it may have a connector on the cable or a locking clip on the motherboard. Release this ribbom cable from the motherboard, don't pull on this cable or you may damage the ribbon cable.

Toshiba satellite L775d clock runs fast

The CMOS Battery is bad. The name used by Toshiba is RTC Battery. (Real Time Clock)

Replace it.

1) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger) and Battery.

2) Follow Anti-Static Precautions.

With a laptop this means buying an ESD wrist strap, and wearing it.
Average cost is around $3 to $6. (Electro Static Discharge)
Connect it's alligator clip to a good ground source.

This is one example,

Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside a computer.
Use an ESD wrist strap, and your laptop will be safe.

A note on the Keyboard Cable connector on the motherboard, and removing the Keyboard;

The Keyboard Cable is an FFC.
Flat Flex Cable.

As such, it is just a flat ribbon cable with no connector, on the motherboard end of the cable,
(The Keyboard Cable is detached from the motherboard, not the Keyboard)



The connector on the motherboard is a ZIF connector.
Zero Insertion Force.
This connector is shown in Steps 9 and 10.

Click on the photo in Step 9.
Note the white rectangular 'bar'.

This part of the ZIF connector is permanently attached to the motherboard. It is stationary.

Note the two tabs pointed out by the Yellow arrows.
This part of the ZIF connector moves.

As directed by the arrows, the top part of the ZIF connector moves towards the LCD screen.

This is seen in Step 10.

The top part ONLY moves VERY LITTLE.
The ZIF connector DOES NOT come completely apart.

The top part acts like a wedge, and wedges the Flat Flex Cable in the bottom part of the ZIF connector.


DO NOT move the top part TOO FAR. As said the ZIF connector Does Not come completely apart.

If the top part is pushed too far, and the ZIF connector comes apart, it is broken.

This means Motherboard Replacement.

D531 powers off when the screen is moved. The screen feels a little loose, so, I suspect a poor connection. Is this a common problem?

Not in any service bulletins I have seen, nor on the internet.

What is common is that the laptop may have been dropped, or an object left inside when the laptop was being closed, or eventually the hinges just wear out.

A loose, or defective hinge will put a strain on connections from the laptop, to the Display Assembly.
Damage, or a loose connection, can occur with the Video Cable.

(Video Cable from motherboard to Display Assembly, and cable to Inverter)

Dell Support > Latitude D531 Notebook PC > Service Manual,

Left-click on Display in the list.
Scroll down to the third photo.
Under - 8. Lift the display out of the cover

No.3 - Display cable pull tab - shows the video cable (Display Cable) connection to the motherboard.

See if this connection is tight.

The Display Cable is an FFC.
Flat Flex Cable.
It has NO connector on the end. It is a flat cable composed of individual wires, laid flat next to each other.
Each wire is insulated from the other wires.

The end of the FFC has bare contact pins for each wire.

The connector on the motherboard is a ZIF connector.
Zero Insertion Force.

The FFC is slid into the ZIF connector, in the PROPER alignment, so that the contact pins in the cable, line up with the contacts in the connector.
(OBSERVE which direction the FFC was installed before removing it. Some are installed twisted over one time. It MUST go back the same direction it was originally)

The ZIF connector has a blue Lock Tab.
This lock tab is brought straight up at a 90 degree angle, to unlock the connector, and free the Flat Flex Cable.

In the photo I pointed out above, the blue Lock Tab is in a vertical position. The position for removing the Flat Flex Cable.

Not a loose connection at the motherboard?
Check for obvious signs of damage to the sheath of the Display Cable.
The sheath could have been stretched, which in turn can stretch the wires, and possibly break them, or cause an intermittent connection.

No obvious signs of damage?
Next check the connection on the back of the LCD screen.
Not loose?

Remove the Display Cable.
Use a multimeter, and check each wire for continuity. (Ohms check)
Have a helper gently wiggle the cable, and see if there is an intermittent reading on the multimeter.
(Break in wire/s)

Check connections for tightness to the Inverter.
