Question about Kipor Parallel Wiring Kit, 30 amp Twist Lock for IG2000P #66624

1 Answer

Is there a small approx 2000W gas generator with 48V output?

I am considering repowering my 24 foot sailboat with an electric inboard motor. In a bind I'd like to be able to run the motor directly off a small generator when the battery bank is low. The motor requires 24V DC.

Generator will run, wont output electricity

You really didn't provide much info to work with - Knowing the make & model & size (as well as its age) would be helpful. Also is it new or have you had it for a while? What test equipment do you have? In other words, what are you using to determine if it is putting out electricity? Has it ever worked? All generators have individual circuit breakers, so try resetting those. If they trip-out immediately then disconnect the generator from the load. reset the circuit breaker(s) again & recheck the output some other way, such as by connecting a table lamp to it. If that works, then consider the possibility that your generator may be too small for the load that you're trying to connect to it. For example, a 2000 watt generator is good for a working load of 1000 watts but is too small for a 2000 watt load. If this is your first experience with a generator, check out the web site www.electricgenerators.com and refer to their sizing charts. Lots of good info there.

The generator kicked the breaker of and was smoking and smelled like electrical

What type of load (electrical) was hooked up to this generation?? If the surge voltage and current was exceeded above the generator maximum for any length of time. There problems, it could be the regulator, insulation burnt off the windings.

I am taking a guess here. Now, 7100 Watts is it typical surge wattage. This mean that the generator will deliver 7100 Watt (voltage times current) this is know as the power factor. The actual operating load would be 6800 Watts and I would even operator the generator at its peak wattage. Something in the neighborhood of 10--15% less the peak wattage. Therefore a good positive theatrical Wattage would be 5800 to 6350 operating wattage. Then this generator would run all day.

Just remember Ohm's Law. Current plays a big factor in loading of a generator while the operation voltage is at 120 AC Volts. Example: electric motor; Now electric motor when starting will pull three time its operation current. Operating current for a 1/2 HP AC motor is 6 amperes but start this electric motor will require 18 amperes. This is one reason why they starting capacitors on smaller electric motors. Larger three phase electric motor can literal stop a generator cold...in its tracks. It put such a large demand on the generator it stops the engine powering the generator. I have seen crankshaft break because the generator could handle the heavy current load.

Remember, any time you are running a small gas powered generator. All ways figure what the load and surge current load will be before hooking up any generator. Normally this is figured in VA (volt/amps). Wish you lock. GB...stewbison

The motor runs fine but will not generate any electricity

With the generator shut off.....
At the generator side of the generator we are looking for a small + and - sign on 2 connection terminals.......you may have to take a small cover off.
What we want to do is re magnetize the generator.
With a regular 9 volt battery.....or almost any small battery will do.....momentarily add the battery power to these terminals.....just for a sec......and thats it.......it's re magnetized.
Your generator will charge now.....if it was in need of a re magnetizing.
This is the cure for 70% of no output when running generators.

I need a 5kW DC generator with -48v output.

I have 5kW generators that produce -48V DC. The problem is that unless your generator is designed to produce -48V DC it would be difficult to retrofit an existing AC voltage output with a DC output.
