You will have to adjust the yoke transformers on the necks of the color guns. this should clear up the slanted picture.

The picture slants from left to right the top has a down slant and the bottom has a up slant not bad but enough to see it

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Convergence lines are SLANTED. Red line is above

Your TV most likely a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Tilted picture

You must be placing the TV near something Magnetic, Speakers, etc. This would account for the green in the corners. The tilted picture is most likely the yoke in the set has moved during rough handling. The first issue can be fixed with a degausssing coil, the second requires a technician to manually realign the yoke assebly and perform a convergence on the set.

Convergence issue

try fixing the convergence 2 after your've aligned the convergence 1 - the second (accessed via the set up control) let's you adjust on 9 different axis to align the red and blue tubes to the green. you select which + sign you want to adust by pressing the corresponding number for the + ie 1 for the top left, and 9 for the lower right corner.

good luck (note - you cant change the green only the red and blue, if the whole edge is a mess try moving the image (you need to be in zoom mode, and then access the position adjustment via the pitcure set up screen.

PT-53WX54 53 in. Rear Projection HDTV Television

Hello jwade,

This looks like it could be a problem in the Convergence/Deflection section. If possible could you send me pictures of the actual problem. Because they will let me know if this is a convergence or a deflection issue. The problem is these two sections are dependent on each other, but follow certain troubleshooting methodologies. Again post or send me pictures of the actual screen, and from that I should be able to help you.

Thank you,

My convergence is offline

the convergence needs to be adjusted for 480i then also enter into the 1080i and adjusted for that format. You would need the service manual for the parameters or you could severely mess your set up. You can purchase the full service manual for your set and get it emailed to you instantly by going to this link, they also offer free tech assistance if you have any difficulty when you purchase a manual. Here is the link.

Slanted picture

Your deflection yoke (a coil around the neck of the picture tube) must have gotten turned. Your can turn the picture upside down by rotating this coil. If your set is in warranty, you should return it. When this "yoke" is adjusted the color is affected too. If you try this yourself you'd void the warranty and mess up your color. Stargazer
