Question about Poulan 1630 16" Chain Saw

I have a used poulan 2450 saw on which the oiler went out. Purchased a new one, instructions pretty brief. Included was a worm gear tool and it suggests it has to be used to adjust the worm gear. Since I have no manual for this saw I am not sure what this is all about. Anyone know how to properly adjust this worm gear on this type saw.

Oiler not working gave it a good cleaning inside & out still no oil


The oil pump is run by a worm gear that is easily stripped. It sounds like this is your problem. You'll have to take the bar and chain off and get into the saw to replace it. Parts are available through poulan if you call the number on the product.

I have a Poulan Pro 16 inch chain saw that will not lubricate the chain. I have cleaned the ports and made sure the reservoir is clean.


It sounds like a bad oil pump or worm gear; this should help
Oil System Plugged:
1. Remove the clutch cover, bar, and chain, clean the bar groove, any holes and passages on the rear of the bar (both sides, consider rotating the bar), if equipped with a sprocket nose ensure it rotates easily at least one complete revolution.
• Clean the saw oiler hole and channel. Insert a blunted, hooked piece of wire through the oil filler hole and pull the hose in the oil tank out.
• Pay attention to the screen or filter on the free end (clean or replace, difficult to determine serviceability).
• Start the saw and see if it oils when revved up (oozes down side of saw).
• If yes reassemble your saw. If no, continue with 2.
2. Work your way through the linkage (use IPL to identify components and locations) cleaning and replacing any defective parts as you go.
• Carefully check the hoses for cracks especially at bends and connections.
• If equipped with an oil pump it is usually behind the clutch (99.9% of clutches have a left handed thread; tighten it to remove it).
• Please make extensive notes & some digital pictures will help during reassembly.
3. If it does not oil on completion of 1 it is most likely a bad oiler or worm gear (see IPL for the location).

The IPL (exploded parts list) for your saw is the only detail for the oil system and it is sketchy at best. Oiler components and part numbers are listed but may be on different illustrations. They are also beneficial with disassembly/reassembly:

The automatic bar oiler isn't working. What

  1. Check the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed. Poulan (Craftsman, Jonsered, Husky) clutch removal tool part number 530031112 if needed, is under $5 from many sources (look at the visible area between the weights if 2 small round sockets are visible you need the tool).
  2. There are metal piston stops available, when square (almost never) with the piston top these work well, if not square they have been known to punch through the piston. I suggest a length of nylon rope (nothing left behind) be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
  3. Everyone I have ever removed had a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).

Bar is not getting lubed. I have thinned the bar oil with coal oil. The syphon tube is in place.

I need remove the clutch on my 2150 poulan pro chain saw, so I can fix the chain oiler.


Good film. Make certain the piston is above the exhaust port or the rope can fall through and damage the piston above the piston ring. When started it comes apart and destroys the saw.
The oiler worm gear is behind the metal cover visible once all clutch parts are removed. HTH

These oilers are called diaphragm oilers and work fairly well when the saw is new with great compression. As the saw wears out, the compression drops and a side effect is less oil pumped. The diaphragm is replaceable and it's not horribly expensive. Most good saws use a gear oiler - and even the newer Poulans use gear oilers. The gear oilers tend to have less problems and don't rely on engine compression.

Bar oiler not working


Talked to a friend woodcutter & he advised me to replace the worm gear behind the clutch. I found the part at Sears,($10) Replaced it & the saw is working fine again. PS to get the clutch off remove the spark plug & incert a piece of rope. That binds the engin so the clutch is easily removed. CB
