Lost or Damaged Driver CD s

Everyday we deal with very many visitors to this site who have lost the driver CD for the devices that they are using. Without drivers it becomes difficult to use the device. I have a suggestion to make in this regard so that we will not have to run helter skelter looking for drivers. The suggestion is as under.

Whenever we buy a device and receive a CD with it, we must copy the drivers to the HDD in a folder named, lets say, Drivers. You may like to argue that it will eat up disk space. Yes, I agree, but the question is how much disk space would it eat up? Let us calculate. Suppose we buy 20 devices. (You have to be a Nut to be buying so many devices). And each device uses 100 MB of software and drivers (not possible to use so much SW). That makes it a total of 2000 MB, or 2 GB space. In todays world when we are buying HDDs having above 160 GB capacity at the least, would giving away 2 GB mean very much. And that too giving away so that you do not have to run about looking for drivers. And this 2 GB is grossly over estimated as no one would buy 20 devices to be attached or installed to any PC/laptop.

And to guard against HDD crash (I hope not, but we should be prepared for the worst) we should burn a CD/DVD every six ensure that the latest addition to the Drivers is safe from HDD crashes or viral attacks or Windows getting corrupted.

Now even if I loose my driver CD I am not worried as I have two backups.

I have a problem with the HD. It is not working.

Well the hard drive on the laptop now is 40 GB. It is an ATA hard drive so you need to buy an ATA hard drive of xx gb. You choose the capacity, but considering the characteristics of your laptop it should be fine a 80 GB or 120 GB. (i mean the RAM is only 256MB and the data transfer will be slow).
It you need further assistance, leave a comment. Cheers

WD 500 GB resized by Norton Ghost Restore to 120 GB and can not get it to original size.

You should partition your new drive first to say 160Gb (you lose a bit after formatting) for 1st partition and the remaining capacity for the 2nd partition. Because your Ghost image is 120Gb it can only restore to a partition of 120Gb, that is why it shows 120Gb on a 500Gb on a single partition.
You may be able to fix this problem without starting again by using Disk Manager (from Control Panel - Admoinistrative Tools) to create a 2nd partition on the hard drive and format this partition.

To free hard disk space

is the 100Gb divided into 2 partition?
since you have done the show all folder and files. and nothing else show up. you can do a defreg. to compress the drive. you may have lots of fragmented files. (that account for the lost space).

While not cheap, Spinrite from GRC was my choice for HD problems of most kinds while I was still doing service.
It isn't cheap but it can perform seeming miracles on problems such as yours.
