When my fuel pump didn't turn on, my truck wouldn't start, if it did turn on it started right up. I replaced the fuel pump and it starts every time, but the fuel pump doesn't turn on every time. Is there an underlying issue with my PCM or ECM?

The first cold day has hit, now the truck won't start. I cannont hear the fuel pump turn on when I turn the key or when the engine is cranking. Is my PCM ground bad?

not yet , the fuel pump relay could be the problem or wire at relay have this check first ...you can give current direct to the pump at the connector ...the contact inside the relay don't make contact every time.

I replaced the relay before I changed the fuel pump. So how do make a direct connection?

  • Denis Houle Oct 25, 2013

remove relay , with a jumping wire and ignition key on..jump the terminal with orange wire and the grey you should hear the pump turning if not your problems is between relay and fuel pump

The fuel pump don't turn on every time . first when the pump as prime or if system is prime the pump will not turn on
the PCM give a ground to fuel pump relay for 2 sec and while the engine is cranking the pump is running all the time.
but pcm don't prime each time

SOURCE: how to troubleshoot 1993 chevy Z71 pcm

Hi Nsilguero,

I apologize for the delay in responding.

From your description, I'm leaning toward a timing chain problem, first stretching, then skipping and finally breaking.

If you're getting voltage to the coil and still getting no spark, there is a test I'd like you to try.

Take off the distributor cap and have someone turn the engine over while you eyeball the rotor. Is it spinning?

This going to take some back and forth interaction. Comment me back with the results. We will proceed from there.

Mike

Fuel pump relay sound bad. Under the hood in the fuse box is the location of the relay. Look under the cover for the diagram to locate it faster. Hope this helps. Please keep me posted. Good luck

SOURCE: Fuel pump issue, 2004 chevy avalanche

1s the fuel pump should not be that noisy, and the problem u are describing is a defective/worn out fuel pump, it is taking time to built pressure, replace the fuel pump and don't forget to replace the in line fuel filter as well.

If this engine is a VORTEC then you may have a problem with the internal fuel system. Under the top plenum there is a fuel reg and poppet valves that inject fuel into the cylinders. Sometimes the tubes that run fuel from the reg to the valves can leak and cause your problem. This cannot be found with pressure check because this occurrs after the reg. PS fuel mileage will go down. Let me know if this helps.Moe

first most GM OEM systems will need to recognize the key first and foremost ,to do that you will need to roll window down on driver door, turn the key to the run position and with engine NOT running leave the key on for 10 minutes exactly ..then turn ignition off then try to start engine. if original system is working engine should start normally

Hi sounds like the typical fuel pump or filter problem with these cars, best way to tell is take top fuel hose off on fuel filter under hood, turn key on ignition (not start) and fuel should pump out, if not its your pump, just beware of doing when engine is hot

My first thought would be: If you repaired an emissions hose, take the car back to Auto Zone (or another parts supplier) and let them tell you what code comes up now. You eliminated one problem, now you have to find another.
I wouldn't do a fuel pump without more information.

Hi
Pop into to your local garage and have a diagnostic test carried out.
Listen to the advise given. It may save you lots of money, especially if you start the "guessing" game.
It does sound like a part may be blocked or failed though, but the sytem needs to be tested thoroughly first.
Good luck
