Question about Garden
It is a safety switch. you can dissconect it. simply unplug wire it should be where your forwad/reverse shifter goes into reverse

It should only do it when the mower is engaged. It's a safety feature, to prevent you from chopping up the people you might back over. My machine has a reverse button to override the safety switch, I have to push it everytime I want to mow backwards but I got used to it

I believe your reverse safety switch is shorting out when you shift it. Take off the cover where the shift lever is and remove the wire from the safety switch. If this cures the problem, replace the switch.
