Sony reel to reel TC -765

I purchased this reel to reel without any instruction manual. When I press the play button it will start to move and then it suddenly stops. Fastforward and Fastreverse work fine. I have tried to locate an instruction manual without any luck, any help would be appreciated. thank you,

I too had this problem with my tc765. I found the two pinch rollers were not lifting up and fully pushing the tape against the rotating capstans in the play/record mode. Solution to my problem involved partly dismantling the pinch roller assembly, cleaning off the old solidified grease and re-lubing with a molybdenum grease. Note: the top plate has to come off first, then the rotating guides and tensioning pegs. Then the cast head cover and flap. It was a time consuming operation, but well within the scope of competent DIY in my opinion.

Sony TC-WR670 how to copy my old cassettes to new tape on bay B?

I can't fing my manuals either. I have the same one. I think you put the originalin one side and the blank in the other. Rewind both to starting point. Press play and pause on original. Press the red record button on the copy tape. Then press pause and press the high speed dub button. If nothing happens hit the pause button on each side. Just trying to remember. May not be right.

I have a sony TC-660 reel to reel player, it had been in great condition, and i love using it. All of a sudden however, the reels will ONLY move in one direction (clockwise for the left, and counter...

In order to maintain tape control and tension the reels always pull lightly in opposite directions during PLAY mode. The capstan moves the tape in the desired direction at a precise speed. If the capstan doesn't engage the tape BETWEEN itself and the pinch roller you'll get the reels battling over control of the tape. Check the tape routing.

I have a Sony TC 630 Reel to Reel Stereo Tapecorder..Pinch Wheel is sticking and will only move when forced and brushes as well...Any help ?

Sounds to me like your Sony has a common problem among vintage reel tape decks..dried /frozen grease/ and or a lack of lubrication. carefully apply a tiny bit of fine lube oil, like 3in1, on the swing mechanism that carries the pinch roller...(you may have to remove the front metal deck face to fully access the swinging pinch roller mechanism) ) . do NOT get any oil on the rubber pinch roller..(best to make sure after by scrubbing the pinch roller surface with a cotton swab lightly dipped in non chemical household cleaner, like 409, or awesome orange i get at the dollar store. Then use the dry end of the swab to ensure the pinch roller is dry. .The pressure pads should swing upward and press the tape against the heads when in play/record mode..if they do not swing up, they are binding/ or out of adjustment....they are spring loaded so when the reel deck is in the stop position the spring loaded pressure pads are held mode releases them to freely swing up and press on the tape against the heads.

Tape Transport issue

FF and Rewind are functions of the reels, not the capstans. If the reels fail to rotate in response to capstan-driven tape motion the unit will assume a broken tape or end of tape. I think you have a mechanical reel drive system failure. Take it to a shop for evaluation and correction.

Tape will not turn

The more detailed the description of the problem, the better for diagnosing the root cause. Thanks.

It sounds like you have a couple of problems. I'll address them as you have them numbered above.

1. Decks typically have belts to drive the various 'reel' mechanisms. Therefore, they can slip without breaking anything inside the machine or the tape. Your first symptom leads me in that direction.

2. That it migrated is mysterious, unless Sony is using a common motor to handle both decks' reel duties.

3. This symptom may have something to do with the root cause of both sides jamming...

Do the cassette well doors come off, say, for cleaning? Could they be dislodge? If so, they may have something to do with the jamming problems in # 1 and #2 as the doors play a part in positioning the cassette and holding it in place against the reel motor cogs. How do the doors operate with NO tape inserted?

Does it take excessive force to close the door only WITH a tape? make sure the tape is fully seated before closing the door. The capstans (directly below each reel cog) have to engage through the small holes at the lower edge of the cassette. They should be straight and clean. Any dirt or oxide on them will cause problems as these are what move the tape at the precise speed necessary for good playback or recording.

My hipshot recommendation, otherwise, is to look around inside the cassette wells very carefully for any foreign matter, debris, dust bunnies.

Do you maintain the deck as recommended?
