Instructions for using gears on 12 speed Mesa runner

I am a 76 year old woman recovering from knee replacement surgery. Have not ridden a bike for 35 years or so. For therapy purposes as well as enjoyment I have purchased a Schwinn 1987 Mesa Runner. It is in great condition and a joy to ride, however never having ridden a bike with gears, I am unable to use them effectively. Can you help?

Thanks for the help. I found a video online explaining how to use the two gear controls together and had a great ride yesterday. On the road again!

Not familiar with the exact model of bike but normally you start riding in a low gear. As you wish to speed up or find it easy to push the pedals just change up in gear and keep pedaling and the gear chain will move to the next gear cog. The secret is to keep pedaling when you select a gear either up or down and the gear will change. Hope this is of benifit.

I was given a used Riviera Verasato 21 speed bike. Since I haven't ridden for years I'm trying to find the instruction manual for it. Where can I get one?

Not that much to a bike like this. should be perhaps two levers to change gears with, go out peddle, change gears, try the brakes, you will get it.

Have an older Huffy female 12-spd road bike that is missing the rear wheel assembly. Looking to find a replacement as well as instruction manual...wheel assy. more important. Thanks.

Unless you have a deep sentimental connection with the bike, it may not be with it:
    Rear wheel - $35-$45
    Rim strip/tape - $1
    Tube - $8-14
    Tire - $10-20
    Gear cluster - $25-40

    New Huffy is about $150-250

You might be able to find a used bike or wheel at a garage sale that would work.

What can you tell me about knee replacement surgery

research this on the net and consult your orthopaedic specialist. It will depend on your bone structure (porous or not), age, your willingness to participate in rehabilitation exercises and your general health, Basically if you have a good surgeon ( check references ), are reasonable healthy (non-smoker, non -diabetic) and are not excessively over weight then most replacements have a success rate of around 85%. There is a process available where a lubricant is injected into the joint that is pretty good for a few months while you wait for the surgery. Again this is not the place to get information on such a serious subject so consult specialist surgeons( 3-4 second opinions) and be guided by them

How do I get the gears to work again on my Schwinn Mesa GSX Mountain Bike?

The shift cable is likely too loose, but there are multiple items to tighten, lubricate and adjust on just the derailleurs, let alone the rest of the bike, before it's safe and ready to ride. I would suggest you get some assistance from a more knowledgeable friend, a bike co-op or a bike shop.

The brake pads fell off my stationary bike because the nuts fell off the bolts so we reattached bolt but don't know how to position the brake pads so they will stay on-i am recovering from knee surgery and...

The brake pads only need to be lined up with the braking surface to work. As far as keeping the bolts in place I would suggest a drop of loctite (blue) on the threads of the bolts to keep the nuts in place.

Can i remove a 5 gear sprocket from 26" tire, and replace it with a 7 gear sprocket from a 20" tire? my roomates touring bike is currently a 15 speed, she loves the bike and does not want to replace it....

Several scenariosto consider here. First of all the compatibility with the hub. Second is the deraileur tarvel and the actual shifter. Components are normally matched in sets from factory and do not transfer over unless the entire set, shifter, deraileur and sprocket. Then there is the issue of chain wear fitting the crank and new hub together. Chains and gears seat into each other as they wear so a crank set should stay with the original hub as well, even if you were to install a new chain the wear pattern would be different.
So the short answer is unless the brands all match and are in new condition and the hubs are the same thread and diameter, you will not get good results
