- i can't get it to go into disk mode, when i reset it the apple sign goes away and then comes back on, but then when i switch to pressing select & play nothing happens. if the apple sign doesn't go away, does this mean it's got some battery charge left or not? i don't know what to do next with this damn thing.

I would attempt putting the ipod into disc mode and see if your ipod is recognized by the computer after you reconnect it. I have researched this issue and found a knowledge base article on apples web site that may help you out with this.
Here are the steps to do it...

Putting iPods with a Click Wheel into disk mode
  1. Before placing the iPod into disk mode, you should verify that it is charged.
  2. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  3. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
  5. Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect"
If you are having difficulty putting the iPod model into disk mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.
If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.

If it won't go into disc mode while not connected to your computer, try doing the above steps with it already connected to you computer.
If none of these steps work, it is sadly probably time to get a new ipod. I hope that it does help you out though. Good luck :)

- You need to switch from holding down the menu and center buttons to holding down the play and center buttons right as you see the apple. If the battery is low or dead it will say connect to power. Please try putting it into disc mode a few more times before giving up. It can be difficult getting it into disc mode the first few times you do it.
