Question about LaCie Computers & Internet

1 Answer

LaCie 200GB HD is now ''read-only''. Recommends reformatting.

Hello,I have a LaCie 200GB external hard drive and a MacBook Pro. When I start up my LaCie I'm prompted with the notice that my computer could not repair the hard drive and the hd is being offered with limited functionality, basically read-only. It recommends that I back-up the info elsewhere and reformat. Recently my laptop was ungraded to the latest MacOS and I wondered if this might have something to do with the issue? I've had my LaCie for a few years and it's been flawless until last month. Any light you might shed would be very welcome.
Thanks!,
Bill Y.

Hi there - I have the same problem so I have bought a new external drive onto which I am trying to copy my back up data. However, when I try and copy the data over it runs through all the files to be copied and says "Preparing to copy to ...." above the revolving blue and white copy bar, and "Preparing to copy XX,XXX items" beneath it, but then nothing happens.

I have left it for over an hour and still nothing is starting to copy. Does anyone have any advice?

    Thanks in advance, Julian

>> my computer could not repair the hard drive

It seems that the disk-drive is "dying", and the "table of contents" on the hard-drive has become corrupted, and automated attempts to "repair" the corruption have failed.

>> the hd is being offered with limited functionality, basically read-only.

Yes. Take this as a "hint" that the disk-drive is about to "die".

>> It recommends that I back-up the info elsewhere

Good advice. Take the advice.

>> and reformat.

This may help -- it will identify any "bad" spots on the hard-drive, and will either permanently avoid using those bad spots, or it will allocate a "spare" track on the drive to be used as a substitute for the "bad" area.

However, even after doing this, I would not "trust" the device to be a "reliable" backup for my important files. Like a well-used chalk-board in a classroom, the disk is getting "worn-out".

If it's still under warranty, exercise the warranty.
If the warranty has expired, replace it.

Can a lacie rugged external hard drive be connect to a macbook -not macbook pro?

Yes - If the unit is USB it will work with any computer that has a USB port - if hooked up to any Mac though it normally will be formatted for use only with other Mac's. You can usually specify what type of filesystem you want to use when you have it hooked up.

Doesn't work

am not so sure if this is a similar issue with iomega2_bing.gif external drive in which the drive wont show up on My Computer but when the external drive was plugged into an ubuntu machine the drive was being detected and working just fine.

Please try to do the same. plug your external drive to an ubuntu machine and lets see if it can be detected. If it is then the hard disk has a similar issue with iomega drives. check this link for the solution.

Is your MacBook as fast as the Lacie Rugged Hard Disk is?

Because solid state drive wasn't available on MacBook Pro at the initial time when it launched. Hard drives on all current Apple laptops are equipped with Sudden Motion Sensor technology. In fact, the Apple laptops that came with Sudden Motion Sensor are: All Intel-based Apple portables such as the MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, PowerBook G4 computers starting with PowerBook G4 (12-inch 1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (15-inch 1.67/1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.67GHz), and iBook G4 computers starting with iBook G4 (Mid 2005) have Sudden Motion Sensor technology. You MacBook may not have come with that technology that could be the reason you are unable to connect it.

Hi I am Vortash sorry to say it sounds like you have destroyed the HD , they are really quite delicate and have watch like precision spindles on the drive and the read arm .. An impact such as dropping them usually destroys these spindles and the hard rive is totally useless .
It is doubtful that you will ever be able to read from it again , regards Vortash

Recognized - but no mount

Don't know about the MAC part, but an I/O error implies that the either the source file cannot be read or the destination drive will not write. This is usually an indicator of a bad HDD. To check, I would attempt to connect the external drive to another computer. If it still gives the same indication, contact the drive manufacturer about data recovery recommendations

can i suggest that you use winrar to divide the file size of your file that you want to transfer to your lacie. this might work.

download winrar @ majorgeeks.com

but if you LACIE still says that it does not have any disk space left...i would suggest that you reformat the HD instead. but make that a last resort...

hope this helps

LaCie Design by F. A. Porsche 160 GB not showing on MacBook Pro

The first thing that I would do is try connecting the drive to different USB Ports. If that does not work see if there is any software that came with the drive or that you can download from the internet that you might need to get the drive working. Next I would connect it to a different computer to see if it works that way. If it works when connected to a different computer I would at least get the files on to that computer and transfer them to the computer that you need them on using a network connection, a CD/DVD, or a USB thumb drive.
