    Call the Dell tech support.

an actual hard drive lock? Those are a bummer, a new harddrive is the only real way.. not even tech support can help with this, I've been down that road, It sucks. the only real way to fix an actual harddrive lock is to remove a chip from the harddrive and solder a new one one. that being said, i had to replace with a new one. with that sector of the HDD locked, not even booting into a bootable CD(like linux) will help, the harddrive will not be dectable.

No boot sector on internal hard drive. No bootable

Hi there,

A boot sector is a sector of a hard disk that contains booting programs stored in the other part of the hard disk. You boot sector might have been deleted or corrupted and you can't logon until you repair or recover the boot sector. To do this you must have your OS cd. Boot from OS cd the follow below steps...

Windows Vista
1. Insert the installation disc.
2. Restart your computer
3. If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.
4. Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
5. Click Repair your computer.
6. Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.

7.

On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem, and if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs.

Boot from you hard disk then you're done!

Have you installed the Windows OS on the new HDD? Insert the new Windows OS in the DVD rom drive, shut down, Unplug, remove battery, plug in, at boot the new OS DVD should start and ask Press any key to boot from CD/DVD, tap key.

When you boot up the laptop press F10 to bring up an list of devices to boot up from, select the CD drive.
OR
Go into the BIOS setup and to the Boot start up and move the CD to the top as the first boot device with the hard disk as the second device.
Your laptop will now boot uo with the Windows Vista installation CD.

A dark screen saying disk read error occurred

This could be the result of a couple different things: 1) the hard drive has crashed and is no longer able to boot into your operating system, 2) the system folder to your operating system has been corrupted and missing the files to allow it to boot up, 3) the connector between the hard drive and the motherboard has something wrong with it and isn't allowing your computer to recognize that the hard drive is there.

My dell xps m1330 will not boot up.it comes up on screen saying ''no boot sector on internal hard drive'' ''no bootable devices''it has had a new motherboard fitted by Dell.i'm trying to install xp pro

When it's booting, try to access the setup, aka BIOS. See if you can set CD/DVD as a booting option. As the top BOOT device. Then see if you can boot your installation CD. You may be able to format your drive during the installation - if the hard drive hasn't failed?

The presario 700 is failing to boot up.

its possible but unlikely.
startup from disk(cd) in first screen choose install windows.in next screen when previous os is found choose install new.
in next screen delete partition then create new partition then format partition and install.
if u have a problem installing after that then ur hd has bad sectors.
if this is the case let me know and can u software to solve it.
the precedure Ive mentioned usually does the trick even with bad sectors unless there are too many bad sectors.
