Question about Fantom Titanium II (TFD500C16) 500 GB USB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Drive Not Ready

The drive is working fine. I go to bed and the automatic backup from the C drive to this drive kicks off. I see in the morning that the backup has not finished, the drive has a solid red light and the computer is frozen. I turn off the USB drive and the computer unfreezes and all other work continues. running XP media edition on a Dell core 2 desktop, 2 GB memory, 250 GB C drive, all USB ports are version 2. Power settings are to not turn off hard drives ever, do not let windows turn off USB to save power. I don't have a clue. The C and USB drive are running NTFS and scandisk shows no errors. Diskmaster shows little or no fragmentation.

Re: Drive Not Ready

Sounds like the enclosure is failing, the drive has bad sector/blocks or there may have been a breif dip in power which has effected the opration, locking up the drive and the computer while it was attached. Hope this helps.

You wont lose any contents of the external drive, but I would recommend to backup your laptop asap, which it looks like you were trying to do. Try to connect the external drive to another pc and see if it works, if it doesnt then you might need to purchase a new exteranl drive to backup you laptop. If it works then your laptop is having hardware/driver issues. Thats hard to say without testing it out. You might want to go to geeksquad but it will cost alot.

221 GB Free on MyBook - Error states not enough space for backup

Is the drive formatted as FAT32?

If so, and your backup is more than 4GB, it will not be able to write the file to the drive.

Open a Command Prompt (Start | Run | CMD) and at the prompt type:
Where V: is the drive letter of your My Book.

That will convert it to NTFS and it will be able to handle files larger than 4GB.

The first thing that comes to mind is the Firelite has become full and can not accept any more backup data.
Delete the data on the Firelite and try running your backup again. If it works then that was the problem.
The backup software should have a configuration setting somewhere that allows it to automatically delete older data and keep it from filling up.
