I have a piece of paper stuck in the top of my hp 1012 printer and I cannot get at the area where the paper is.

Follow these steps to remove jammed paper from the printer

.
1.Open the print cartridge door, and then remove the print cartridge.
NOTE:  Opening the print cartridge door and removing the print cartridge relieves tension on the product rollers, which prevents damage to the product and makes the removal of jammed pages easier.

Figure 1: Open the print cartridge door and remove the print cartridge

CAUTION:  To prevent damage to the print cartridge, cover it with a sheet of paper to minimize exposure to direct light.

2.With both hands, grasp the paper where it is most visible, including the middle, and then carefully pull the paper straight out of the product.

3.Look inside the product for any torn pieces of paper or labels, and then remove them.
4.If any jammed paper remains in the input tray or the output tray, grasp it with both hands and gently remove it.
5.Reinstall the print cartridge, and then close the print cartridge door.

The printer cuts off the top part of the document when printing. Is this a margin issue?

Yes, most likely your application's margin settings are incorrect. Try printing a test page - NOT from the application. If this is Windows, go to printers in control panel, right-click on the subject printer, choose Properties, then click the Print Test Page button. You should get the standard Windows printer test page with the logo at the top and all the printer specifics below. If the test page is also cut off, look around in the HP-provided software for any margin and/or page size settings that are incorrect, such as A4 paper when it should really be Letter size.

PHOTO paper

The HP printer was prepared to use HP's photo paper to print borderless pictures among other things.
If you use a third party photo paper, try using A4 size, position the picture in the paper using MS Word or another WYSIWYG program and, after printing, cut the picture in the right size.
