Question about Craftsman Garden

6yr old Craftsman Lawn Tractor - Koehler 18 HP Auto. Sputter&Dies

My husband tuned i up this spring (new battery, oil filter, air filter, gas filter, spark. It seem to run ok the first day (leff than 30 minutes). When we went to use it again. It would start right up, but after 10 minutes it would start to sputter, then die. We noticed there was no gas getting to the gas filter - when we filled it manually, it worked ok., bu there seems to be a problem with getting suction from the engine. I checked he gas cap and that works fine - plenty of air getting in there. We put a new gas filter in thinking that maybe the new one was faulty - same thing happened. Any ideas???

The gas filter was about 1/2 full when I started - it was virtually empty in 1 minutes, again, no gas filling it from the gas tank side.

I checked the gas cover again, and it is fine. It does't seem to be getting suction from the engine side, not the gas tank side. Any other ideas?

Took it off, blew through the hole, made sure it was ventilating. I also loosended it when the gas was getting low in the filter and still the gas did not move into the filter. A little history - we paid Sears $120 2 yrs ago when the lawn mower kept dying, It ended up being the gas cap venting hole was clogged. He blew in it and wa la - $120 bucks please. So I am familiar with the gas cap problem.

the fuel line goes to the filter, then to the carb. There is no fuel pump - which of course would sound like the resolution to the problem. Could a pin hole in the line be a likely culprit? The sears guy my husband talked to briefly said that maybe it. There is no fuel leak that we can see - and we have been looking. Any other ideas? I appreciate your help!

Try running it again and when it starts to die remove the gas cap and see if it starts to run better. It's possible that the gas tank isn't venting correctly. If that doesn't work post back and we'll try to come up with some other solutions.

You say you checked the gas cover again...what exactly does that mean? Did you take it off or what? I am not visualizing what checked the gas cap means....

Does the fuel line go from the tank to the carb with the fuel filter inline or does it go from the tank to a fuel pump and then to the carb?

do you have the right fuel filter? some are for pressure and some are for gravity feed, the pressure type (fuel pump) wont flow the gas correctly. another possibility would be the coil.

Try changing the its oil-seals. The problem lies there. It may be damaged or the oil-seals are now smaller than its is used to and it is because of the heat. The oil-seal are rounded things that are made of rubber.

TRACTOR BLEW WHITE SMOKE, AND STARTS TO SPUTTER

Start with making sure your oil lever is not over full. If it is it may be getting into the crankcase breather hose that goes to the carburetor hence the white smoke. Sometimes also you can blow a gasket in the breather system and it will do the same. Check for oil leaks in the breather system. Hope this helps. donnyb60
