Thanks for your speeedy response, Tim! Yes, the light is on.

It no longer recognizes a normal music CD. This is a TOSHIBA Satellite A135-S4467 running VISTA Home Premium 32 bit.

    Thanks, Tim. Here's my report:

[BIOS Update Saved in VISTA Downloads folder.
SA130d0v190.exe - Started to install from Windows] Firefox crashed and laptop failed to boot up. Automatic repair enabled me finally to boot up. I re-downloaded the Update and saved it to a Diskette. Not sure how to continue from here.

[DVD Driver Saved to Desktop: fw_to02_os2008109.exe - Error message: "This is not a valid Windows32 application' "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to protect this computer" SH: I unblocked it and still got the error message, so I deleted this .exe file]

["InterVideo WinDVD Update for Windows Vista" Saved to Desktop: app_dvd_player_os2008074a.exe - Error message: "This upgrade can't apply to your version of WIN DVD. Setup will now abort." I deleted the file.]

Now I have restored the laptop to 5 days ago, when the CD drive was working. But it might be a mechanical problem ...
Just for the record; DEVICE MANAGER info:
    ~DVD/CD ROM drives:
Windows says "the best driver is already installed"

    ~Disc Drives:
    Hitachi HTS41616J9SA00 Device
Windows says "the best driver is already installed"

    Thanks for your suggestions, Tim.

Tim, I rated the solution as not helpful because the downloads were rejected by my TOSHIBA! I appreciated so much your suggestions and trying to help. Alas, I fear that the drive has simply lived and loved and died! I'll be back home a week and have my techie confirm this and replace it if necessary.
    Thanks again!

Does it recognize a normal music cd? Also, can you tell me the make and model of your laptop, please?

Hi there. When you turn the laptop on, does the light on the CD drive come on?

Hi there.

It sounds like your Class Filter Drivers are missing/corrupt.

I would download and update your BIOS (this should include the class filter drivers), update your DVD drive firmware, and also the WinDVD update for Windows Vista. You can get these from the Toshiba website, here:

The 3 downloads I just mentioned, are the first 3 on the list.

Let me know how you get on.

Can't detect XP discs in win 64 bit

Hello Joe, 64-bit processing is faster than 32-bit processing because the CPU is handling more bits at once, However, a 64-bit OS requires more resource than a 32-bit OS, A 64-bit OS requires that device drivers operating in kernel mode be a 64-bit drivers, These drivers must be available from the device manufacturer. An application is compiled to process 64-bit or 32-bits. A 64-bit OS can run either 64-bit applications or 32-bit applications, but 64-bit applications are faster also 64-bit applications cannot run on a 32-bit OS.
A 32-bit OS can only address up to 4 GB of memory, More than that might be on the motherboard, but the OS cannot use it, because it does not have enough memory addresses to assign to the physical memory. A 64-bit OS theoretically can address up to 1 terabyte of memory although in practice, most motherboards can only hold from 12 to 16 GB of memory.( A terabyte is roughly 1000 GB or 1 trillion bytes). If you open many applications at the same time and have high computing needs and enough hard drive space and memory, you can benefit from 64-bit computing. To get most out of it, the processor, motherboard, operating system, drivers and applications must all be 64-bit, and you should have installed the maximum amount of memory the motherboard supports.

If you have a toshiba L650/OFN with 4 gb do you tick 32 bit or 64

If you are referring to what type of OS you want to install then tick 64 - 32 bit os's will not recognize fully the 4gb you have.

this computer is shipped with windows xp 32 bit, can be upgraded to vista. As for 32 or 64 bit?, the only difference you will see between them is if you have more than 3 gig of ram installed a 64 bit O/S will see and use all the ram, where a 32 bit O/S is limitted to 3gig of memory it can address.
Personally, I believe you will have a lot easier time finding the 32bit drivers for your laptop and printer. 64bit drivers for older hardware are sometimes very difficult to find. GO with 32bit on this laptop.

Toshiba a200/205 series Hard disk is toshiba mk1246gsx need compatible driver for windows xp I need to convert my OS from vista to XP

Well... this is common on newer laptops. It is due to the fact your HDD is SATA (Serial ATA) and Windows XP CD does not have the drivers needed to recognize it. The solution I use is a bit High Tech: to remaster your Windows XP CD including the drivers needed. Or, just settle to live with Vista until January, when Windows 7 will be available to the public. If you are not faint of heart, google this: nLite; with this program you can remaster your XP CD. (You need a working PC with CD-RW to actually do the job).

Get windows vista home premium

You can run a 32 bit technology OS on a 64 bit technology platform.

It will run pretty fast.

You just can't run a 64 bit technology OS on a 32 bit technology platform, though the 64 bit OS is recommended on a 64 bit platform.

Toshiba 5005-s504 bios update

the most appropriate bios version can be found on for US model or for Canadian model. If the install from windows wont run, i think your os is a 64 bit windows vista. If you do have a 64 bit vista, try this solution. Downgrade to XP then update the bios. it will do work. Then reinstall again the OS 64 bit vista. Its quite bit long but it will eliminate the use of cd or floppy disk.
