Worth fixing 2005 jenn air elec downdraft cooktop?

Short in two switches (supposedly) so blows all electricity. Estimated at $320 to fix (installing 2 new switches). Is it worth it? New cooktops are twice if not more the price. My cooktop is 4 ceramic flattop burners

Breaker tripped and all power blew when stove not in use. Can't turn breaker back on. Repairman thinks it is two switches since the wouldn't turn on. He fixed them so they didn't stick - but still tripper blew but at least not all the electricity.

Oh this is posted under wrong appliance. It is an electric Jenn Air JED8430ADW not a gas range.

Frankly I think it is an electrical problem too. Now that I have some ammo, that is can suggest what the problem may be I will call another electrician. Thanks SG

Oban, This does NOT sound like a cook top issue --> "blew when stove not in use", "Repairman thinks it is two switches" (I assume you mean the breakers),

I could go on and on.... but what I've seen with these is improper connection at the junction box. In other words, whoever wired it up, screwed it up. Look at #4 in this diagram. The problem is happening here.

"He fixed them so they didn't stick"....Oban... the reason a breaker is there is to trip when there is a short circuit. It is most definitely NOT there to be bypassed! You may consider RE-considering your choice of electricians.

Go outside and kill the breaker. Then open up the junction box (you have to open the doors below the cook top). When you remove the cover of thew J-Box, I'll bet you see burn marks (if not melted plastic).

Check it out.

Posted on simular case the switches list for $35 on jenn air sight for the do it yourselfer. To replace them at that price and have two more and four burners that could possibly fail then it's a tough call wether it's worth it or not,< to me I would just fix it and save money> but we aren't all created equaly in repairing things I've found. Would suggest as did in other case if you replace it, try to sell it < someone who can fix it will give you something and not a total loss> just an idea to help out.

I used my grill for the first time, & the downdraft didn't work we'll, the house filled with smoke & eventually the downdraft shut off and I had to finish cooking in a pan. My Jenn-Air is...

The downdraft is electric so there must be something malfunctioning with it. It is a high volume downdraft fan that is to be vented to the outside. Could it be that something has clogged the vent hole up, not allowing the fan to evacuate the smoke?

While I am not a big fan of Jenn-Air, their fans are usually high quality if they are installed correctly, with the proper vent lines.

I have a Jenn-Air downdraft cooktop. My blower fan will not shut off. When I press down on the metal part the knob goes on, it will shut off. Can anyone help?

It appears you simply have a bad switch. Try contacting Jenn-Air or looking them up on the web to find out if they have replacement parts available

I just replaced and old '80s Jenn Air downdraft cooktop with a new JED 8430 and the fan blows rather than sucks. How do solve this problem? Its wired the same as the old one with the whitel and ground...

Best off to call a reliable service company such as Sears. If you just purchased it, the repairs will be covered under the manufactures one year warranty.

Jenn air jed8430ADW worth fixing

Looked up switches and they sale for about $35 thru jenn air, seems steep for repair and if you know which ones are bad and know how to work on things then I would suggest saving some headache and money in this case. Simply paying attention to #1 safety <power off> #2 how it is assembled < screw placement, wires> savings would be big deal to most homes. If you're not interested in doing this then just remember it lasted four years without fail and new ones could take you that long again. The downside is there are two more and four used burners as well. I don't feel it is my place to tell you best answer for you because we all have different situations. I would keep it because I can simply fix it for a reasonable cost, but not all of us can do that.If you don't keep it sale it to used appliance place and at least get something out of it for the trouble.

Downdraft vent on jenn air cooktop

How do you get the inside area of the vent clean from the grease and oils where the filter is?? I have a rectangular box style downdraft that the vent goes into the floor, I pulled the filter, but the box is to slender to get an arm into to scrub the grease....... does the bottom come off, or is it a sealed unit? How do you get all the brease from the bottom if you cannot reach it?
