Generally, the licensed software for your laptop is tied to that machine/brand. If you bought a copy of vista and installed it on the laptop, you may be able to install vista on three machines if that is the version you bought.
Most Microsoft programs are locked to one machine and won't activate on another system.
Now, if this is an old, slow (less than 1 Ghz) with less than 2 gigs, it probably will run Vista very slowly if you get it installed. I'd use the OS that was on the old machine instead of trying to install Vista.
I believe you are misunderstanding it. The old disc is the software and driver for windows XP.
You will need to go onto the HP support website and look up your printers model number. You will be able to download the latest driver for Vista for no cost.

If you go to the HP website www.hp.com, near the top of the main page you'll see a link to support & drivers. Once there, select the box for drivers and downloads, then in the next step put the model number for your printer (c5180). From there it will ask you whjich operating system, select the one on the laptop you want to install the printer on (xp, vista, etc). It will then direct you to the software & driver options available for your printer.

p.s. look for the vista compatibilily update patch also.
Yeah, i assume that since you restore your computer to previous settings, the Software installed in your computer will no longer be there. However, to make your printer work again with windows Vista, you need to download the full feature software and drivers.
Below is the link where you can choose different operating systems, including Vista so that you download the Software.
Just copy and paste the link on the address bar, and it will bring you directly to the page where you need to select first your operating system. Afterwards, please make sure that you gonna select the "HP Photosmart Full Feature SOftware and drivers" under Drivers page.
Installing the SW and printer driver is just very easy, just read the Installation Wizard and your good to go!
Please give me feedback regarding the outcome of the steps i mentioned.
