For what purpose are you pressing the F1 key. The function keys may have different uses depending on the computer. When combined with the Fn key of a laptop they may also do certain actions. You should read the manual of your laptop to find out about the function keys.

Lock switch stays on

The light goes on to indicate that the shift lock is engaged, so all letter type in upper case (capital) letters, or on machines with "spell check" to indicate a mis-spelled word. It should go out when you hit eithor left or right shift keys, correct the mis-spelled word or just continue typing.
If it just stays on all the time no matter what you do, there is a problem with the main board.
