Yes there are Universal Print drivers that can be used.. but it would take a Google search to find them. Also I'm pretty sure your printer should work already without the need for more drivers on Linux..... The 2900 driver should work for the 2900E. The problem may be that there is a:
Canon SENSYS i-LBP-2900, and
Canon Laser Shot LBP-2900
Which printer do you have? Which driver did you download?
