There isn't any debris. To reset the heater do you turn the heater off and back on using the panel inside the house?

How do you check the thermostat?

To check the thermostat, you can use an ohmeter and place black probe on neg side and red probe on positive side. While turning thermostat, see if the meter increases. If it does not increase while you turn up temp, than it will need to be replaced.

I viewed the limited technical material that I have available on this
spa heater. The thermistor is the temperature sensor. Since you
replaced the thermistor and still have the problem, it is likely that
your failure is either in the wire harness between the thermistor and
the control module of a failed control module. If you have a volt/ohm
meter, you can disconnect electrical power and check the resistance
through the wiring connections for the thermistor that plug into the
control module. Most thermistors will measure high resistance such as
10K ohms (10,000 ohms). I don't have the resistance specification for
this thermistor. Check the resistance directly off of the leads of the
new thermistor. If the resistance readings through the wires that
connect to the control board for the thermistor match the resistance
measured directly at the thermistor, then the wire harness should be
okay. This would indicate that you would need to replace the control
module. If the resistance through the wire harness is different
than the resistance measured directly off of the thermistor (such as
open, or infinite resistance), then the wire harness would need to be
    replaced to correct this failure.
    These are general
troubleshooting tips based on the limited technical data on this
heater. Disconnecting electrical power and then reconnecting it may
reset the control. The operating manual appears to indicate that you
should cycle the selector button to stand by and then back to spa or
pool to reset the control after an error code is corrected.
    These
tips may help you determine the cause of the failure. If not, you may
need to have a repair technician diagnose the failure.

Hi,
There are two things that can cause this...
low water flow
mineral build up in heat exchanger

Check and verify water flow through the heater

if that is ok, then the heat exchanger needs to be cleaned

CODE SF CURRENTLY DISPLAYED ON LED / CLEANED 2 SENSORS ON EXTERNAL PLUMBING,SAME CODE. LOOKING FOR LOCATION OF TEMP.SENSOR?

The code SF indicates there is either a bad temperature sensor or the input to heater is faulty. I would buy a temperature sensor from a pool supply suppilier and install it. That solution has a very high likelihood of being successful. If you have a few tools and a little mechanical ability installation should be easy. I hope this helps

HELP! I have Hayward 400K pool heater. Try to start last weekend and got SF code which is temperature sensor error. What/how I can solve this? Thanks for any help. My email coastalway@yahoo.com

Replace the thermistor. It is a stainless steel plug ~1/2" pipe thread with three wires leading from it to the back of the control panel. Shut the heater down and the pump too; remove it from the header and install a new one. Route the lead wire thru the chassis to the control board and plug it in...problem solved.

Haywood heater has code sf what does that mean

SF is a thermistor error. Once the heater cools down it should reset itself. If not, call a service tech.
