Hi

The drive actually can't go over its capasity then it will be full everything will still be there but it will just be full, like a bottle.

So to free up some space you need to use that external hard drive. If its brand new drive you might not see it in my computer instantly so plug it in and open my computer. Do you see the new drive there? is it turned on and everything?

If you do see the drive and it works, and you can copy files in and out of the External drive then jump to "Copy files from D to your external drive or delete not needed files"

Partition the new drive:

If you don't see it and everything is plugged in correctly and its turned on and you hear the ding dong sound when you turned it on / connected it then the drive needs to be formatted and partitioned.

To do this, Right click with the right side mouse button on your MY computer Icon and select Manage. Then on the computer management window select Disk management. Now on the right side it will load for a moment and you should get a list of all the drives available.

You should be seeing something similiar to this
I have a 4720z and - 2a3fd0a.jpg
Don't touch the dvd/cd rom drives and also the C and D drives are not the ones we wan't to modify.

You should see a new drive below thats the usb external drive, might be uninitialized and in that case you should get a message about initializing the drive, click yes on that. If not then find the drive that says Unallocated. Right click on that unallocated space And select new volume or partition.

go with the wizard and NTFS etc size as big as possible and when It asks about format, MAKE SURE TO SELECT QUICK FORMAT or you will be sitting there waiting for 1-5 hours as it goes over the whole disk.

Copy files from D to your external drive or delete not needed files

Now when you open your my computer you should see the Drive there as a new drive or whatever you named it or a local disc H: for example.

Go into your D drive on my computer and delete some files and programs you don't need if you have no idea what is what then focus on the things you do know about.

Copy your files from D drive to the external drive.

If you need help in doing this we can do a remote support session so that I can see your screen and do it with you. just let me know right now if you want to do that if you are stuck and we can do it now, otherwise it might go to tomorrow or I might not be available. I'm available right now.

Computer does not react to hard drive

I just solved this probelm on mine, You need to use Seagate DiskWizerd for these drives. They r Barracuda 7200.11 or 12 updated firmware and then used the Disk wizard provided by Seagate. Follow the instructions and u will be able to get full access to your Iomega drive.
You will also be able to reformat the drive so that u can use it on windows or use it as a drive to run windows...
I hope this helps you out..
"Hint" open and pull the drive from the case and u will see that it is a Seagate product, go to their site and download the fully free tools to fix your drive...

I need to upgrade my firmware for my seagrate hard disk drive 7200.8

Hi i have just looked into need to upgrade your firmware please read this
Seagate products are run by firmware. Having the latest firmware can improve performance and or reliability of your product. Seagate recommends applying new firmware to enhance the performance and or reliability of your drive.
Like any software, firmware is improved over time and problems are also fixed. Every drive family has a couple of firmware releases during the life of the product. Please check in regularly to determine if new firmware is available for your drive.

As new firmware becomes available for other products we will make note of it here. At this time, we have firmware available for Barracuda 7200.12, DiamondMax 23, Barracuda LP, Barracuda 7200.11, Barracuda ES.2 (SATA) and DiamondMax 22 drive families.
If newer firmware is available for your drive, it will reflect the improvements we have engineered for the latest manufacturing. Firmware for legacy products will be the final release from manufacturing. Please note that Seagate does not offer details about specific firmware.

Until recently, firmware updates for typical desktop and laptop computers were difficult and somewhat risky. This situation, in part, was based on a lack of friendly firmware download tools and operating system limitations. This situation has improved and Seagate now offers firmware updates as a routine matter for the general support of your Seagate drive.

note.gif If you are troubleshooting a system or OS problem, you should not consider firmware updates until after exploring more typical troubleshooting steps like file system error checking and anti-virus scanning.
Please use the following links and instructions below to determine if firmware is available for your product. If firmware is available, we recommend that you make a back up before running the actual update and that you read and follow all instructions, cautions and warnings that may be displayed.

Follow these steps to determine if a firmware update is available for your drive:

How do i partion my segate hard disk, it is 5oo GB

In order to partition a drive, you must use the partition manager. There is a command-line version of this application that is more consistent between the different Windows OS's so I'll instruct you in that.
First we need to be sure we are partitioning the correct drive. Open up My Computer and write down what drive letter your seagate external drive is (i.e. G).
Now let's start up disk partition manager. click on the Start button, and then click on "Run" type in "diskpart" (without the quotation marks) and press enter. This will open up a command prompt window with the heading "Microsoft DiskPart...".
Type in the following command: "list disk".
This will bring up a list of all of your disks currently recognized by the computer. Be sure the drive letter you wrote down earlier is on this list, also write down the drive number corresponding to your seagate external at this time. now go ahead and select this volume by typing "volume __" where __ corresponds to the drive letter of your seagate drive.
Now that we have everything set up we will create the partition.
type "create partition [size=_]" where _ is the size of the partition you want to add, in megabytes (MB).
If you encounter any trouble or want something more than a simple partition see the full instruction to use the diskpart utility here:

Best of luck! and please rate my response

External Hard Drive I/O Error

Somehow i tried to format and it was formatted. took pretty long time as 1 terabyte. i thought all is ok as the drive was accessible. Just to double check, i scanned the drive thorugh the seagate manager and it got stuck on 10% for few seconds and then said that the hard disk is faulty and should be immediately returned if under warranty. and to confirm it also gave me read errors http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/05/15/how-to-tell-hard-drive-physical-damage/

so i'm giving it to seagate service centre as it probably has physical faults, bad sectors. and someone told me that 1TB hard drives are not stable.

Scroll down to: Partitioning the drive in Windows XP / Windows 2000 (for systems where this is the 2nd drive in the system).
Follow the instruction on the web site.
This Seagate web site will help you setup the Seagate 160 drive.

If you feel the drive is still at fault you can run Seagate’s SeaTools. Click on the next link:
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools
This software will check the 160GB drive.
(Follow the online instructions for), SeaTools for DOS.

In a Windows XP system & using a FAT 32 & a cluster size of 16kb instead of NTFS. Windows will see the total size of the drive but can only access 149GB of drive space. 11GB of drive space will be used by the FAT. File Allocation Table. The FAT is windows guide to every cluster on the drive.
XP uses NTFS & sets each cluster to 4kb. This 4kb size lowers the total usable GB size & uses more GB's for the FAT. You're 127GB size may be correct for a Win XP system using a NTFS file system. The FAT is using 33GB of drive space as a locator for every cluster on the 160GB drive.
Help with understanding the NTFS file system: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/russel_october01.mspx

Bijay if you are still having trouble understanding please post any questions here.

Good luck!
Mike
