Problem with sound card, modem & broadband connections after storm

My Gateway Media Center 610 has developed a couple of problems after a storm. It was plugged in to a UPS power source, but it seems the storm might have caused a problem. 1. Suddenly does not find a sound card. I looked in Device Manage and it shows everything is okay with Legacy audio and other listed drivers, but it will not try to play any sounds. 2. I have tried to dial up to the modem and with will not connect. Again, in device manager it shows the modem working fine. I have also tried hooking up the high speed at work directly by cord. It says it is connected, but I cannot use the internet. Same is true of our wireless connection. It says it is connected, but does not work.

Yes, I tried that. Now I am trying to reinstall all the drivers off the Gateway CD that came with it.

Are the speakers integrated into the display?

Are the speakers "muted" (or volume-control set to "minimum") ?

Was the telephone-cable from the computer's modem connected to a port on your UPS, or is the telephone-cable connected to a wall-outlet? If the latter, the electrical storm could have transmitted high-voltage through the telephone-cable into your computer?

If you plug your telephone into the wall-outlet (or to the telephone-port on your UPS), do you get a dial-tone? Can you call out?

The Gateway 610 uses an AGP graphics slot so any video card with AGP hookup should work fine. The link below is to a parts site for this computer.

It's kind of difficult to tell what your exact problem may be, but note that the cable and connections for dial-up and broadband are different.

The dial-up cable is telephone wire connected to its port in an internal modem. Broadband is connected with thicker Ethernet cable connected to a network card.

The ports look similar, but the Ethernet port is a bit larger.

So, you need to connect to the right port/card with the right cable.

When you connect to dial-up, you should hear a beep-beep-beep sound from the modem.

Hope this info helps.

I would then suspect the monitor.
Sounds like the video card is working.
Try another monitor to see for sure.

This is a well known issue with gateway media centre and there is no easy solution for this problem. If you are an expert in tearing apart the system and putting it back, then this LInk has some options which have worked to many people.

BSNL Broadband connection

Hi,

In brief yes. 2 possible ways:
1. Use a router; or
2. Configure 1 of your PCs to be the Default Gateway and enable Internet Connection Sharing (this is where the single user broadband connection must be plug in). If your modem uses USB connection to the PC (Gateway), use the LAN card IP add as the Default Gateway of the other PCs in your network. If your modem uses the Ethernet port, you need to install a 2nd LAN card on the same PC and do the same configuration.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turns up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

PPPoE over Edimax BR-6104K without a modem

HI,
Actually in short  "you NEED A MODEM;"
In order to connect your router you need to connect a modem in "bridge mode'( bridge mode is nothing but a configuration on the modem)..

this is a picture of  rear side of a  router,,, you have to connect the modem into the wan port of the router (above),, and in port number 1,2,3,4 you can connect your computers,

Setting up the wriless network

You need to have a cable going from the modem to the gateway, and then another wire going from the gateway to the computer.

Gateway Media Center PC is on, but there is no picture.

I have been fixing one for a customer. At first I thought that it was the typical burned out powersupply. Delta Electronics has created a replacement. The old REV 00 is 185 watts peak. The new REV01 is 185 nominal. Was the shaggy067 did not take the time to look up is that the 610 is an "All in one" modular monitor/case.
This customers is the first one that I have replace the power supply and it still does not work. I believe the flourescent backer of the LCD is shot. I will not know for sure until I find another one. The S-video works fine, so I am testing it using my projector. Everything works except the lcd panel.
