That is a relay an it is going bad
if the fridge is over 5 years you can replace it with a 3-1 relay

This is one of three issues. First when it is on do you hear a Click sound from the back of the unit and another click within a few seconds. If you hear this and no loud humming sound it is should be the start device. Another way to check for this is to unplug the unit and take off the bottom back panel (usually 1/4 in driver screws for cross tip). Once that is off you will see wires going to the side of the compressor into a little box(start device) on the compressor. Look for any signs of blacking(burnt marks). If you remove the metal clip holding the start device it should pull off. If it sounds like a baby's rattle when you shake it, its toast.
Part Number: 218721119

If these checks seem to be ok it is most likely a seal system issue and must be fixed by a Federally approved Technician.

If the Compressor is not making any noise and is cold to the touch then it could be a Defrost Control (240554502) or Refrigerator side Temp Control(5304482075)

Hello Thayden,

I understand that the Refrigerator compressor is not working on your unit. There are three possibilities of why the compressor is not working, the compressor is bad, the starter is bad, or the capacitor is bad.

To check the starter you will need to do the following (most common): Refer to picture at the bottom of the post
1. Unplug the unit
2. On the side of your compressor there is a cover this is the starter relay cover.
3. Remove the cover
4. Remove the wires
5. Remove the starter (top piece stuck on two rods)
6. Check if bad (shack it if you hear a noise/knocking it is bad and will not allow compressor to start)
7. Replace it and the bottom one the over load.
8. Reinstall in reverse

The Run Capacitor (uncommon that they go bad but possible)
1. The little black or silver box that two wires run to from the starter
2. Check to see if contacts or unit is burnt.

The Compressor
1. If you replace the above items and the compressor is not running the the problem is the compressor. This will take a licensed HVAC person to replace.

The above parts are inexpensive between $30-$50 at your local appliance parts store. There is a 50/50 chance that this will work and save you the cost of replacing the compressor or the whole refrigerator.

Thank you for choosing FIxYa.com

Plastic box you're referring to contains the start components for the compressor. The clicking sound sound you hear is the protective overload shutting the compressor off because it won't start.
Two possibilities
1. The components inside the plastic box (cover) are defective and need replaced. You can remove them, by snapping off the cover and pulling them straight off. Most appliance parts houses will be happy to test them.
2. The compressor has failed internally.
Note: In my personal experience when dealing with whirlpool Estate models, 99% of the time it has been a failed compressor.

if you hear a clicking like the compressor is trying to start, like a clicking on and off this sounds like it could be your start run relay trying to kick your compressor on. if this is bad it will continue to click, and your compressor won't start. unless your mechanically inclined this might be the time to call a service tech. the start run relay switch sits on the compressor behind the fridge.

My Frig is not cooling

your ptc relay on the compressor when they go out they make a clicking noise. The compressor will quit and little bit later might try to come back on and click again. You need a new ptc relay. It is on the compressor little black box just unplug your refrigerator and pull the relay off. undo the wires and get a new one. Kinda staight forward compressor has 3 prongs that the relay plugs into.

Side by side refrigerator is not cooling.

If this click comes from a little box mounted on top of the compressor, you're usually looking at either a starter or a compressor motor problem. A new starter (the thing inside that box) is just about cheap enough to replace, just accepting the risk it won't work. With a sealed compressor, a motor failure probably spells the end of the road. The compressor sounds like the start device went bad. When that happens there is the "click" during trying to start, but since it can't the compressor overheats in time and then the thermal overload opens to protect it from overheating. Take the back lower panel off the refer and see if the compressor is really hot to the touch. If you have a little white colored box on the left side of the compressor pull it off and shake it... if it rattles and debris falls out you know it's bad. There is a kit that replaces it and it's real easy to install yourself. If you have a compressor that has a little blue indian head symbol on it however... your compressor is toast. Once they overheat they're done. If you have any other brand name you should be OK with a simple start device change out.
